Phase: escalating

The chamber air grew heavy with expectation as Varrika stepped fully inside, Merrin a half-step behind her. The figure in Shimmering Light followed them across the threshold, its glowing eyes never leaving the dwarven warrior. The space seemed to sigh around their intrusion, dust motes catching the torchlight in slow spirals. Varrika's hand tightened on her mace handle instinctively, muscles coiled and ready.
Merrin kept her crossbow aimed carefully ahead, every sense straining to detect movement or threat beyond what the flickering torches revealed. The pool in the center caught her eye again—a body of liquid that seemed to defy description, shifting between colors with each blink. It pulsed faintly, as if alive.
"You see anything else?" Merrin whispered, her finger resting lightly on the crossbow trigger.
Varrika shook her head silently, her gaze sweeping the chamber with practiced efficiency. The walls curved inward slightly, meeting the floor in seamless joins that spoke of ancient construction. More pedestals lined the perimeter, some bearing objects wrapped in cloth or hidden beneath covers.
"Stay sharp," Merrin repeated softly. "Something about this place feels... wrong."
Varrika nodded, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a particularly large mirror propped against one wall. Its frame was ornate, almost gaudy, and the glass seemed to catch and hold the torchlight in a way that made her uneasy.
"Over there," Varrika murmured, angling her chin toward the mirror. "That thing gives me the creeps."
Merrin adjusted her aim slightly, keeping the mirror in her line of sight. "Then let's not get too close to it. Something tells me we don't want to see what reflects back when we're this deep underground."
The two women stood there for a long moment, the only sounds the faint gurgle of the central pool and their own steady breathing. The air seemed to thicken further, heavy with anticipation that neither could explain or name.
