Round 199 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika catches her breath beside Merrin, the air in the crevice grows thick with the scent of damp earth and ozone. The sound of the tunnel collapsing behind them recedes into a muffled rumble, leaving only the faint echoes of shifting stone and the creaking of old timbers. The darkness seems to press in around them, the narrow space making it difficult to discern any features beyond the faint glow of a few scattered torches. Merrin's hand still clutches the hilt of her crossbow, her fingers white-knuckled as she strains to listen for any sign of movement from the other side of the crevice. "We need to keep moving," she whispers, her voice barely audible over the creaking of the tunnel. "We can't stay here." The words hang in the air like a challenge, the pressure of their situation pressing down on them like a physical weight.
I swallow hard, trying to ignore the way my heart is pounding against my ribs. The crevice feels like it's closing in around us, the walls pressing closer with every labored breath. But I know Varrika's right - we can't just sit here and wait for the whole damn place to come down on our heads. "Alright," I whisper, forcing my voice to stay steady despite the way my hands are shaking. "Let's see where this leads us." I shift my weight, wincing as a sharp rock digs into my back. The crossbow feels awkward in my hands, the stock catching on the rough stone walls as I try to maneuver it through the narrow space. But I keep moving forward, one slow, careful step at a time. The darkness is oppressive, pressing down on us like a physical weight. I can't see more than a few feet ahead, and the torches seem to be getting further apart with every passing moment. But I can't bring myself to strike another one - we don't know what other horrors this place might hold, and every light we use now is one less we'll have later when we really need it. So I keep moving, my eyes straining against the darkness as I search for any sign of movement or danger ahead. The sound of crumbling stone fades into the distance behind us, replaced by the soft scuff of our footsteps and the occasional drip of water from somewhere deep in the bowels of the earth. I don't know what we'll find at the end of this passage - more monsters, more traps, more of the same nightmare we've been living for what feels like an eternity. But I know one thing for certain: we can't go back. The way we came is gone, collapsed into rubble and dust. Our only choice now is to keep moving forward, no matter where this path might lead. And so I do, one careful step at a time, the weight of the unknown heavy on my shoulders but the knowledge that we're still alive, still fighting, still hoping for a way out of this madness.
I nod grimly at Merrin's words, my heart pounding in my chest as I force myself to my feet. The crevice is narrow and cramped, the walls pressing in on us from all sides as we stumble forward into the darkness. But Merrin's right - we can't stay here. We have to keep moving, no matter where this path might lead. I tighten my grip on the mace, the rough wood a reassuring weight in my hand as I feel my way along the rocky walls. I can't see more than a few feet ahead, and the darkness seems to press down on us like a physical weight. But I keep moving, one slow, careful step at a time. The crevice twists and turns, leading us ever deeper into the heart of the mountain. And as we go, I can't shake the feeling that something is waiting for us up ahead. Something dark and dangerous, lurking just beyond the edge of our vision. I glance over at Merrin, her face a pale blur in the darkness beside me. "Stay sharp," I murmur, my voice barely audible over the sound of our footsteps. "I don't like this any more than you do."
But what choice do we have? The way we came is gone, collapsed into rubble and dust. Our only chance now is to keep moving forward, no matter where this path might lead.
