The tunnel collapsed behind them like a rotten log giving way under too much weight, a great groaning of stone and dust exploding outward in a choking cloud. Merrin didn't wait to see the full collapse—she was already moving, every instinct screaming at her to get clear before the whole damn place came down.

But as she launched herself forward, something caught her eye—a narrow crevice in the wall, barely visible through the dust and chaos. It might be their only way out before this place became their coffin.

"Varrika!" she shouted over her shoulder, already changing direction. "This way!"

The dwarf was right behind her, thank the gods. Merrin didn't hesitate—she threw herself into the crevice just as a massive section of ceiling gave way with a roar that shook the very air around them.

Darkness swallowed them whole as they tumbled into the narrow passage, stone dust and the stench of old earth filling their mouths and lungs. Merrin coughed harshly, trying to clear her throat while her hands felt along rough walls in the pitch black.

"Varrika?" she called out softly, heart pounding. "You alright?"

"Aye," came the dwarf's gruff voice from somewhere close by. "Barely. What now, scout? We can't see a damn thing in here."

Merrin fumbled for her tinderbox, fingers shaking slightly as she struck flint against steel. A spark caught, then another, and finally a small flame flickered to life on the wick of her remaining torch. She held it up, casting eerie shadows across the cramped walls of their new prison.

The passage stretched ahead of them, narrow and winding into darkness. Water trickled somewhere nearby, and the air smelled of damp earth and... something else. Something ancient that made Merrin's skin crawl despite the heat from the torch flame.

"We keep moving," she said finally, voice barely above a whisper. "Forward. Away from that mess behind us." She gestured down the passage with her free hand, trying to ignore the way her stomach twisted with unease. "And we hope like hell this leads somewhere better than where we came from."

Varrika grunted in agreement, already moving forward with her mace held ready. The dwarf's face was set in grim lines, eyes scanning every shadow for potential threats.

"Stay close," she warned, voice a low rumble. "And keep that torch high. I don't trust this place any more than you do."

Merrin nodded, falling into step behind her companion. The passage seemed to swallow the sound of their footsteps, leaving only the drip of water and their own labored breathing echoing off the stone walls.

As they pressed deeper into the darkness, Merrin couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them from the shadows—something old and hungry that had been waiting for intruders for a very long time.
