The thunderous roar of the collapsing floor filled the air, drowning out Varrika's cry as she felt her grip slipping on the crumbling ledge. She pushed off with all her might, propelling herself toward Merrin just as the entire section gave way with a deafening crack. Merrin, already in motion, barely registered Varrika's shout over the cacophony of falling stone. She dove forward, arms outstretched, and managed to catch her friend mid-leap just as they both tumbled across the slick floor.

The collapsing section behind them opened up like a gaping maw, swallowing the golem's remains and the magical pool in a shower of stone and water. They slid to a stop mere feet from the edge of the new chamber revealed by the catastrophic collapse. Merrin rolled onto her back, panting heavily as she helped Varrika regain her footing. The dwarf warrior clutched her tightly, both women shaken but alive.

"By the Ancestors," Varrika gasped, looking down at the chasm that now separated them from their previous location. "That was too close." She turned to Merrin, her expression a mix of relief and lingering fear. "You caught me. I... thank you."

Merrin offered a shaky smile, her own heart still racing. "We're alive. That's what matters." She glanced around the newly exposed chamber, taking in their surroundings with a practiced eye. The walls here were different—smoother, almost polished—and strange symbols pulsed with an eerie inner light along the edges of the room. At the far end stood a massive door, its surface covered in intricate carvings that seemed to shift and move when viewed directly.

Varrika followed Merrin's gaze, her expression darkening as she took in the ominous sight. "What do you think is behind that door?"

Merrin shook her head slowly. "I don't know. But whatever it is, I have a feeling we're meant to find out." She reached into her pack and pulled out one of her remaining torches, lighting it with practiced ease. The flickering orange light cast dancing shadows across the chamber walls, making the pulsing symbols seem even more sinister.

Varrika moved closer, her hand resting on the hilt of her mace. "We should move carefully. This whole place feels... wrong somehow." She glanced back at the edge they'd just crossed, where the collapsed section now gaped like a dark wound in the stone. "And we need to find a way back to our supplies if we're going to have any chance of getting out of here alive."

Merrin nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the chamber for potential threats or escape routes. The air here felt thick with magic, almost suffocating in its intensity. She could feel the power pulsing through the stone beneath their feet, and it set her teeth on edge.

"Stick close," Merrin said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "And keep your eyes open. Something tells me this is far from over."
