Round 174

Phase: escalating

The air was thick with the scent of ozone and burning crystal as the ground gave a final violent shudder. The chamber lurched to one side, and a section of crystal wall slid open with grating friction. A narrow winding stairway revealed itself, descending into darkness below. The platform was already tilting dangerously, crystal shards scattering around Varrika's boots as she found her balance.
Merrin moved forward instinctively, her crossbow held ready even though she could barely see more than a few feet ahead through the swirling dust. She could feel the weight of the weapon in her hands—a comforting presence in the face of the unknown dangers that lurked in the darkness ahead. Varrika took another step forward without hesitation, her eyes fixed on the stairs below.
"Down," she mouthed clearly to Merrin, her voice carrying despite the distance between them. Merrin nodded slowly—what other choice did they have? The platform was collapsing around them, and she could feel the ground shifting beneath her feet. They descended carefully, each step a gamble on unstable crystal formations. The stairs wound down into a larger chamber below, and as they reached the bottom, both women froze.
A massive pool filled the center of the room, its surface smooth and completely still. But it wasn't water—it was pure crystal, refracting the dim light from above in every color imaginable. And surrounding the pool, pulsing with an otherworldly energy, were countless smaller crystals growing directly out of the floor and walls.
Varrika spoke first, her voice barely more than a whisper. "What is this place?" Merrin shook her head slowly, equally at a loss. "I don't know."
