Phase: escalating

The abyss swallowed them whole, two bodies merging into one consciousness, magic searing through their veins like liquid fire. The ground vanished beneath their feet, replaced by endless shadow and the distant promise of escape—a pinprick of light far below. Varrika’s grip on Merrin’s hand tightened instinctively as they plummeted, her eyes wide with terror. She could feel every inch of Merrin pressed against her, their shared heartbeat pounding in sync.
Merrin pointed ahead, voice barely audible over the rushing wind. “There! Something’s glowing up there!” Varrika squinted, following her friend’s outstretched finger. A pinprick of light indeed, impossibly distant yet somehow growing larger with each passing second. She nodded grimly, adjusting her stance to stabilize their freefall despite the lack of solid ground beneath them.
The Book’s power pulsed erratically around them, its magic seeping into every pore and muscle fiber. Varrika gritted her teeth against the sensation, focusing on maintaining a protective barrier between them and the void. She could feel Merrin doing the same, their combined wills barely holding back the encroaching darkness.
Suddenly, something shifted in the shadows around them. A ripple in the darkness, a momentary glimpse of... something else?. Varrika’s eyes narrowed, scanning the surrounding gloom for any sign of movement. “Did you see that?” she hissed to Merrin, her free hand instinctively moving toward her mace.
Merrin nodded, face pale but determined. “I saw it. Something’s out there watching us.” She craned her neck, trying to spot the source of the disturbance while keeping one arm wrapped tightly around Varrika for balance. The wind whipped past them, carrying with it a faint sound—a voice?—but the words were lost to the rushing air.
Varrika felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the temperature. “Keep your eyes open,” she growled, her gaze never leaving the shadows. “And whatever you do, don’t let go of my hand.”
