The chamber air was thick with the scent of ancient stone and something else—something wrong. Merrin steadied herself against the wall, her heart still racing. The book clutched to her chest pulsed with an unsettling energy, its power seeming to thrum in sync with her own quickened heartbeat. Varrika's scarred face was set in a grim mask of concentration as she surveyed their surroundings.

The crumbling walls of the hidden chamber rose up around them, ancient stonework covered in swirling patterns that seemed to move and shift in the dim light. A soft glow began to emanate from the book's pages, casting eerie shadows across the stone surfaces. The symbols etched into the rock responded to the ethereal illumination, pulsing with an otherworldly energy.

"Less than ideal? Try suicidal," Varrika growled, her voice a low rumble in the still air. "What manner of sorcery is this?"

Merrin opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, the book gave another insistent pulse. The glow intensified, and the very fabric of reality around them seemed to waver. A swirling vortex of shadows materialized near the center of the chamber, coalescing into a vaguely humanoid shape.

"Fools," a voice echoed from within the darkness, its tone carrying both amusement and warning. "You seek the Time-Splitting Sword? Then prove your worthiness by facing your greatest fears."

The shadows solidified further, taking on the form of a tall, robed figure. Its face remained obscured, but twin points of light glowed where eyes should have been.

Merrin's grip tightened on the book, her mind racing. What did this mean? Greatest fears? Together or separately? She glanced at Varrika, seeing her own unease reflected in the dwarf woman's tense posture.

"Prove our worthiness?" Varrika spat, her hand moving to rest on the hilt of her mace. "And what exactly does that entail?"

The figure remained silent for a long moment before speaking again. "Each of you will face your deepest terror. Conquer it, and you may proceed. Fail, and you shall remain trapped here forever."

Merrin felt a chill run down her spine. This was beyond dangerous—this was potentially soul-destroying. But what choice did they have? The book's power pulsed again, as if urging them onward.

"Together," Merrin said firmly, meeting Varrika's eyes. "We face this together. Right?"

Varrika nodded slowly, a grim determination settling over her features. "Aye. Together."
