Seraphine's eyes gleam with an unnerving intensity as she studies the runes, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns etched into the parchment. Halie takes a step closer, her hand on the hilt of her holy symbol, her gaze darting between Seraphine and the gate. The air inside the barrier feels too still now, charged with an energy that makes the hairs on the back of Halie's neck stand up.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward, my crimson eyes scanning the shadows beyond the gate with practiced precision. The air inside Halie's barrier feels charged now—with potential yes, but also with an undercurrent of danger that makes my skin prickle. "Wait," I say sharply, holding up a hand to halt anyone from rushing in. "We don't know what might be lurking just out of sight." My gaze lingers on the intricate runes etched into the stone frame—there's something familiar about their pattern, something that tickles at the edge of my memory. But before I can place it, another tremor shakes the ground beneath us. "Whatever this 'truth' is," I say slowly, "it clearly warrants extraordinary protection." My free hand tightens on my staff as I consider our options. We could press forward, relying on brute force and quick reflexes to overcome whatever dangers lie within. But that feels... disrespectful somehow. This isn't just another dungeon crawl—this is something ancient and powerful. I turn to Seraphine, my expression serious. "Can you try to decipher more from those runes? Or perhaps Merrin," I glance at the rogue, "can you use your skills to search the immediate area for traps or hidden passages?" We need more information before we rush in blindly. As I wait for their responses, I focus on containing the situation. The gate is unstable—if it fully activates its defenses, we could be overwhelmed before we even begin our investigation. I need to buy some time to assess the threat properly. I mutter an incantation under my breath, channeling a small amount of arcane energy into the area around us. A shimmering field surrounds the entrance, not as potent as Halie's barrier but enough to give me early warning if anything approaches. It's a subtle spell, barely noticeable unless you know what to look for. "Everyone stay alert," I say quietly. "We don't know what might be lurking just out of sight." My eyes scan the shadows beyond the gate, looking for any sign of movement or magical aura. The air inside the barrier feels charged now—with potential yes, but also with an undercurrent of danger that makes my skin prickle. I glance at Halie. "Keep your holy symbol ready," I advise. "Whatever this place was built to guard, it might not be friendly to the faithful." My instincts tell me there's something ancient and powerful beyond that threshold—and dangerous too, judging by the way it makes the hair on my arms stand up. The ground beneath us trembles again, more strongly this time. Dust falls from the ceiling in a fine shower. Whatever magic holds this tower together is fraying—we're running out of time to make a decision. "Whatever we do," I say finally, "it needs to be quick and deliberate." The air beyond the gate shimmers with residual magical energy. There's definitely something powerful past that threshold—and dangerous too, judging by the way it makes the hair on my arms stand up. I take a step forward, my staff held ready. Crimson eyes narrowed in concentration, I assess the immediate area. The ground trembles again—whatever magic holds this tower together is fraying fast now. "We can't afford to dally here much longer," I say finally. "Whatever we do, it needs to be quick and deliberate." My crimson eyes scan the shadows beyond the gate, looking for any sign of movement or magical aura. The air inside the barrier feels charged now—with potential yes, but also with an undercurrent of danger that makes my skin prickle.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I hear the sharpness in Jeane's voice and turn my attention from the runes to the gate, my heart skipping a beat at the sight of the shimmering barrier surrounding the entrance. "You're right," I say quickly, my voice barely audible over the low hum of the magic. "We shouldn't rush in blindly."
My eyes dart around the room, taking in the intricate patterns on the walls, the way the air seems to thicken with each passing second. There's a sense of something ancient and powerful here, a feeling that what lies beyond this gate is not meant for mortal eyes.
"I can try to decipher more from these runes," I offer, holding up the parchment. "But it will take time. Merrin, perhaps you could use your skills to find any hidden passages or traps?" I look at the rogue, hoping she might have some insight into the immediate area.
As I wait for their responses, I focus on the runes again, tracing my fingers over the complex patterns. The ground trembles beneath our feet, and a fine layer of dust falls from the ceiling, settling on my shoulders like a shroud. Whatever magic holds this tower together is clearly fraying—we’re running out of time.
The air inside the barrier feels charged now, heavy with an energy that makes my skin tingle. I can feel a faint humming deep within the stone, a vibration that seems to match the rhythm of my own heart. It’s both terrifying and exhilarating, a sense of standing at the precipice of something vast and unknown.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of my heart. This is what we came for, isn't it? To uncover lost knowledge, to understand the mysteries of the arcane? But now that we stand on the threshold of discovery, a part of me wants nothing more than to turn back, to leave this ancient power undisturbed.
Yet, as I look at my companions—Jeane with her staff held ready, Halie with her holy symbol gripped tight, Merrin’s sharp eyes scanning every shadow—I know we can’t go back. We have to see this through, no matter what dangers lie ahead.
The ground trembles again, more violently this time. A large crack appears in the stone floor near the gate, widening with each passing second. The air inside the barrier grows thick and heavy, making it hard to breathe. We can’t wait any longer.
I look up at Jeane, my eyes wide with a mix of fear and determination. "Whatever we do," I say, my voice steadier than I feel, "we need to do it now."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I feel the ground tremble beneath my feet, the ancient magic of the tower's wards straining against our presence. "Listen up, everyone," I bark, my voice cutting through the tension like a battle cry. "This gate is unstable. If it activates its defenses fully, we could be overwhelmed before we even begin our investigation." I look around at each member of the party in turn, my eyes hard with determination.

To Seraphine, I say, "Keep working on those runes. We need to understand what we're dealing with here." My gaze shifts to Merrin. "And you, see if you can spot any traps or hidden passages. We can't afford to be caught off guard."

I turn to Halie, my expression serious. "Halie, keep your holy symbol ready. Whatever this place was built to guard, it might not be friendly to the faithful." I glance at Jeane, seeing the sorcerer's staff held at the ready. "Jeane, maintain that barrier spell. It might be our only warning if something approaches."

As I speak, my hands move of their own accord, adjusting my grip on my mace. The weight of it is comforting, familiar, but even my trusty weapon might not be enough against whatever lies beyond that gate.
