Round 33

Phase: escalating

The atmosphere in the room shifted subtly—a faint electric tingle that raised goosebumps on exposed skin. Halie felt it first, her cleric senses prickling with warning. Her eyes snapped to the source: Abby standing frozen mid-sentence, and now—a tiny demonic figure perched casually on her shoulder like a living ornament. It was nude save for its joints, an obscene little doll come to life, and its lips were moving close to her ear.
Jeane turned with predatory grace, her wings settling against her back in one fluid motion that drew every eye. She fixed Hera with a look that was almost warm—until you noticed the iron beneath the surface. “Hera,” she purred, voice carrying across the charged air, “always the caretaker.” Her gaze flicked dismissively toward Silra before returning to the civilian woman. “But you misunderstand, darling girl. Silra doesn’t need protection—from me or anyone else.”
Silra took a deliberate step back, hands raised in a universal gesture of peace that somehow managed to look defensive rather than submissive. Her eyes were wide but calculating as the demon began its seductive whisper campaign on Abby’s shoulder. She knew better than to underestimate Jeane’s capabilities—knew exactly what the succubus could do with a willing victim like Abby. But she also knew her own worth, and wouldn’t be dismissed so casually.
“Jeane,” Silra said coolly, “I appreciate the offer of... protection.” Her tone made it clear she meant the exact opposite. “But I think we need to clarify a few things before this goes any further. For starters, what exactly are the terms of your binding? What does ‘enhanced senses’ mean precisely? And how do we know you won’t just... adjust our perceptions over time?”
Jeane’s smile widened fractionally—predatory satisfaction at being challenged directly rather than through intermediaries like Halie or Hera. “Oh, Silra,” she cooed, “always the lawyer. Very well—let’s discuss terms like civilized beings.” She glided closer, wings half-spread in a display that was both intimidating and enticing. The air around her shimmered faintly with residual magic.
