Round 194

Phase: converging

The floor bucks beneath them like a living thing in its death throes. The wardstone pulses faster now, each beat sending visible ripples through the barrier Jeane maintains with gritted teeth and trembling arms. Her wings beat once in panic before she forces them still—control is everything right now, especially when every instinct screams to abandon this cursed place immediately.
Halie braces harder against the door, mirror slipping on the slick floor coated in spilled lubricant and water flooding out from the ruined bathroom. She can feel the frame giving way, metal screaming under stress that no human construction was meant to withstand. "Ninety seconds!" she shouts back, her voice strained from pressing against the wood. "Maybe less! The frame's cracking—I can feel it giving way!"
Across the corridor, Hera sobs quietly, her body trembling as more of that viscous corruption seeps from her pores with each ragged breath. She tries to speak but only manages a wet gurgle—too much of the stuff already inside her system. Silra's voice echoes up from below: "Found something! Narrow but it goes down! Maybe thirty feet to the next level!"
Jeane feels her control slipping with every pulse of the wardstone. The barrier flickers, her vision blurring at the edges as she draws on reserves that taste like ash and old sins. She can hold this for maybe two more minutes before her own strength fails—demons aren't built for endless self-sacrifice after all. But abandoning the barrier means the wardstone's energy floods out into the corridor, and that means instant death or worse for everyone here.
"Thirty feet!" she calls back to Silra, voice tight with effort. "How wide? Can we fit through?" The answer matters more than she wants to admit—because if it's too narrow, they'll have to choose who stays behind. And the choice won't be about worth or skill or bravery. It'll be about who's most useful as a last resort sacrifice to buy time for the others.
The building screams again, louder this time—a structural member giving way somewhere above them. Dust pours down from the ceiling like snow made of concrete and regret. Halie coughs, pressing her face against the door to filter the air through her sleeve. She can feel Hera moving behind her, trying to back away from the spreading corruption that makes Halie's skin crawl just looking at it.
"Stay close!" she snaps without turning around. "I won't let it touch you." The words come out harsher than intended—fear making her tone sharp—but Hera stops moving anyway. Good girl, Halie thinks despite herself, immediately hating the paternal condescension of the phrase even inside her own head.
Jeane's wings beat again, slower this time, more controlled. She can feel the barrier straining against the next pulse—one... two... three—and holds it firm just as the energy tries to break through. Her vision tunnels for a second, darkness at the edges creeping inward while her demonic nature screams at her to let go and save herself.
No. She grits her teeth harder, pushing back against the corruption that wants to consume her from within. Not like this. Not after everything they've survived together. She'll hold this barrier until the last second if she has to—even if it means burning out every reserve of power she possesses.
"Jeane?" Halie's voice cuts through her concentration, worried and strained. "How long can you maintain that?"
Two minutes maybe, she thinks but doesn't say aloud. The truth is too bleak for words right now. Instead she just shakes her head slightly, white hair swaying with the movement as she keeps her eyes locked on the wall where the barrier meets the wardstone's energy.
"Just... keep that door braced," she manages through clenched teeth. "I've got this."
The floor shifts again underfoot—something structural giving way lower in the building—and Halie stumbles forward against the door with a grunt of effort. She braces her feet wider, trying to find purchase on the slick surface now coated in both water and spilled lubricant from the ruined bathroom beyond.
"Fuck," she mutters under her breath, feeling the door frame flex dangerously outward. "Fuck fuck fuck." Each pulse from the wardstone makes the wood strain against its hinges—she's barely holding it in place anymore, let alone bracing against whatever might come through from the other side.
Behind her, Hera whimpers softly—a sound that makes Halie's stomach twist with protective instinct even as she fights the urge to look back. The poor girl is covered in that slick sweat now, more of it seeping from her pores with each passing second. If any of that stuff gets on Halie's skin...
No. She shakes her head sharply, focusing all her attention on the door and the straining frame. One problem at a time. Keep the barrier holding. Keep Hera safe behind her. Don't think about what happens if Jeane's spell fails or if the floor collapses under them.
"Silra!" she shouts down into the darkness again, voice cracking with barely controlled panic. "How long? We need seconds here!"
The response comes back muffled but clear enough: "Maybe thirty feet! Narrow but passable! Just... complicated descent—ladders and service tunnels mixed together. Could be twenty minutes to navigate safely if we're careful!"
Twenty minutes. Halie feels the words like a physical blow—too long, far too long when they have maybe two minutes before this entire floor collapses completely. She glances sideways at Jeane, still holding the barrier with visible strain showing in every line of her body.
"You heard her," she says, voice tight. "We need to move now."
Jeane doesn't respond immediately—too focused on maintaining the spell to spare words or even a nod. Her wings beat slowly once, twice, each movement costing her more energy than Halie can possibly understand. The barrier flickers again at the next wardstone pulse, and for a second Jeane's eyes roll back in her head before she forces them open with visible effort.
"Can't..." she gasps between pulses. "Can't maintain and move at same time. Someone has to—"
"We'll split it," Halie interrupts immediately, already moving her weight off the door. "You hold the barrier. I'll get Hera down there and come back for you."
Jeane's head snaps up at that, crimson eyes blazing with sudden fury even through the strain. "No. Absolutely fucking not. You're not leaving me behind to—"
But Halie is already moving, stepping away from the door and turning to face Hera. The poor girl looks terrified—hyperventilating, covered in corruption sweat, trembling so hard she's making herself unsteady on her feet.
"It's okay," Halie says softly, crouching down to eye level despite every instinct screaming at her not to get close. "I'm going to guide you down there, okay? Just stay behind me and do exactly what I say."
Hera nods frantically, trying to speak but managing only another wet gurgle that makes Halie's stomach turn. She reaches out—can't help herself—and grabs Hera's arm to steady her. The skin feels unnaturally warm and slick under her fingers, but she doesn't let go.
"Stay close," she mutters, more to herself than Hera this time. "Don't think about it. Just get her down there."
Jeane watches the whole exchange with barely controlled rage, wings beating faster now in agitation even as she maintains the barrier. When Halie starts guiding Hera toward the darkness where Silra descended, she snaps: "Stop. Both of you. You're not leaving me here alone."
Halie pauses mid-step, one hand still gripping Hera's arm while her other reaches out to brace against the wall for balance on the slick floor. She turns back to face Jeane, already forming arguments in her head about responsibility and sacrifice and doing what needs to be done.
But before she can speak, the building chooses that moment to remind them all why they're in this mess in the first place. A massive groan echoes through the structure—loud enough to make even Hera flinch—and then something gives way with a sound like a gunshot. The floor beneath their feet drops about an inch before slamming back up, and suddenly every surface is vibrating with the force of something structural failing somewhere nearby.
Halie stumbles forward with the movement, still gripping Hera's arm tight enough to leave bruises later. They both crash to their knees on the slick floor—water and lubricant mixing together to create a treacherous surface that offers no purchase. Halie ends up half-sprawled over Hera in a tangle of limbs, trying desperately to keep them both upright while also not letting go of her grip.
"Fuck!" she shouts, struggling for balance on the shifting ground. "Jeane—move! Now!"
Jeane doesn't need to be told twice. The moment Halie yells, she's already in motion—releasing the barrier spell with a gasp of relief even as she starts sprinting toward them across the corridor. The wardstone pulses immediately, energy flooding out into the hallway just as Jeane reaches them.
"Hold on!" she shouts, and then they're all tumbling down into darkness together—Hera screaming, Halie cursing, and Jeane maintaining a desperate shield of magic around them that barely keeps them from splintering apart on the descent.
