The wardstone's pulse is a physical warning now—a tremor that travels through the building's bones like sickness spreading. The sound is wrong, a dry rattle that no structure should make. Dust sifts from the ceiling joints where they've never separated before this moment.

Jeane stands near the center of the hallway, her wings half-spread for balance as another pulse hits. She looks calm on the surface but her eyes are wide with the kind of fear only someone who knows true danger can show while still maintaining composure. Her hands grip a large black dildo like a conductor's baton, channeling something dark and powerful into the wall socket where it vanishes into electricity.

"Two minutes," she says, voice tight.". Maybe less." The words are precise but the math behind them is terrifying—she's tapping demonic reserves to hold this barrier, and tapping energy has consequences for a succubus. Especially when it means drawing on power that corrupts everything around it.

Halie braces herself against the door with her back, using her weight to keep it closed. Her hands are wrapped in torn cloth, burns from earlier showing through—she can barely grip the heavy mirror she's trying to use as a barricade bar. The floor beneath her feet is slick with spilled lubricant and rising water, making every stance precarious.

"I need numbers," Jeane snaps, frustration bleeding through her controlled tone. "How long before this building collapses completely?" She doesn't have patience for vague estimates right now—she needs to time her spell collapse perfectly or they'll all die in the wardstone's energy release.

The entire floor feels like it's breathing now, each pulse from the wardstone making the walls flex outward slightly. The sound of cracking concrete and groaning steel accompanies every tremor. Something large shifts deep inside the structure with a sound like a ship settling into waves that aren't natural water.

Silra's voice calls up from below: "Not seconds—minutes maybe." She hates admitting uncertainty but even her elven precision has limits when the building itself is coming apart around them. The darkness of the service tunnel behind her swallows most of her silhouette except for the gleam of her teal eyes reflecting emergency light.

"How many?" Jeane demands, and there's an edge to her voice that makes Halie flinch despite knowing it wasn't directed at her. Two minutes of tapping energy is already pushing Jeane's limits—any longer and the corruption will start leaking through the barrier she's maintaining.

"I don't know exactly," Silra shouts back, frustration clear in her tone. "The structural damage is... widespread." She doesn't finish—the building groans again, louder this time, and a section of ceiling tiles simply drops down into the hallway behind Halie with a crash that makes Hera scream.

Jeane grits her teeth, focusing every ounce of power into maintaining the barrier. The electricity around the dildo crackles with visible corruption now, tendrils of shadow coiling off the metal and into the wall socket. Her wings beat once for balance as another pulse hits—she's tapping too deep, pushing herself beyond safe limits.

"Fuck," Halie mutters under her breath, pressing her weight harder against the door. The mirror bar shifts dangerously on the slick floor but she braces wider, using her entire body to hold it in place. Hera's behind her, hyperventilating and whimpering—her corruption is spreading fear through the group like a physical contagion.

"Listen to me," Jeane says, voice strained but still commanding.". You need to stay calm." She's not just talking to Halie or Silra—she's addressing everyone, trying to maintain control over the situation before panic spreads completely. "The barrier is holding. We have time."

But her eyes show what she's hiding in her voice—the wardstone pulses are coming faster now, each one weakening the structure further and drawing more energy from her reserves. She can feel the corruption leaking through the cracks in her concentration, fighting against her control.

"Time for what?" Halie demands, genuine anger cutting through her fear. "To die trapped behind this door while the whole building collapses around us?" She shifts her weight again, trying to find a better stance on the treacherous floor—but every movement makes the mirror bar shift ominously.

Silra's voice comes up from below: "I found an exit." There's a pause that feels like it lasts minutes instead of seconds as no one breathes. "It's narrow and unstable but it goes down at least two floors." She's offering them a way out—but it means leaving the penthouse floor, leaving the wardstone behind them in a building that's actively collapsing.

Jeane's hands clench tighter around the dildo, knuckles whitening as another pulse hits. The electricity surges so violently that sparks fly from the socket and she has to fight to maintain her grip. "No." The word is flat and absolute. "We can't leave the wardstone behind us—it'll corrupt everything below this floor."

"But we can't stay here either!" Halie shouts back, desperation breaking through her control. She's trapped between the literal and metaphorical dangers—the door she's bracing against and the corruption spreading from Hera behind her. "The building is coming down!"

"It's not a choice between staying and leaving," Jeane grits out, sweat beading on her forehead as she fights to maintain the barrier. "It's about containing the wardstone's energy." She takes a deep breath, visibly forcing herself to calm despite the strain. "Silra—how long until that exit collapses if we use it?"

There's a pause while Silra considers the question, and when she answers her voice is grim: "Minutes. Maybe less than what you have left on your... spell." She doesn't say "wardstone" but they all understand—their only options are dying here with the wardstone contained or escaping into a collapsing building where the corruption will spread uncontrollably.

Jeane's entire body trembles with the effort of maintaining the barrier now. The shadows around her have depth, substance—her demonic nature is bleeding through the cracks in her control as she taps deeper reserves. "Listen to me," she says again, voice shaking but still commanding.". We have one option."

"What?" Halie demands, leaning harder against the door as another tremor runs through the building.

"We need to contain the wardstone's energy release." Jeane's eyes are glowing crimson now, pupils contracting like a cat's in the dim hallway light. "I can't hold this barrier much longer—but if we redirect the energy into something that can contain it..."

"Like what?" Silra cuts in from below, voice sharp with suspicion. She knows exactly what Jeane is suggesting—using the wardstone's power directly instead of trying to contain it.

Jeane meets her gaze directly through the floor and says the terrifying words: ". We need to let me access the wardstone directly."
