Round 189

Phase: converging

The building's death rattle grew louder with each passing second, groans echoing through the narrow service tunnel like a dying beast's final breaths. Silra crawled forward faster, boots splashing in standing water that seemed to be rising millimeter by millimeter with ominous persistence. Her fingers found only smooth concrete walls and crumbling insulation—no exit, no structural support, nothing but dead ends and the feeling of being buried alive.
The wardstone pulsed again, louder this time, and she felt it in her teeth like a dental drill at high speed. "Fuck," Silra hissed, pressing forward despite the growing panic that clawed at her throat. The tunnel narrowed even further ahead, barely wide enough for her slim frame to squeeze through. She paused, weighing the risks—getting stuck halfway or staying put and waiting for the building to collapse around them both.
Behind her, Jeane's voice carried through the barrier separating them, sharp with frustration and something darker that made Silra's skin crawl despite the distance. The demon-woman was tapping into reserves that were probably best left untouched, but they needed every advantage right now. Still...
The water level rose another inch, lapping at her knees now. Something shifted in the walls above her—a groan of stressed metal and concrete that sounded way too close for comfort. "Shit," Silra muttered, forcing herself into the narrowing gap ahead. Her backpack caught on jagged concrete, tearing fabric but not slowing her descent into darkness.
The tunnel opened up slightly beyond the choke point, revealing a small chamber filled with shadows and the faint glint of something metallic. A service junction? Another dead end? Either way, it was space to maneuver—and maybe, just maybe, a way out that didn't involve playing sardines with structural collapse. She wriggled forward, heart pounding in her ears as the wardstone pulsed again.
"Jeane?" Silra called back, voice echoing oddly in the confined space. "What's happening? How much time do we have?"
The answer came back strained but controlled: "Two minutes. Maybe less. The wardstone's getting stronger with each pulse." A beat of silence, then: "And Hera's fear is spreading through the group like fucking poison. I need you to find a solution before someone panics completely and does something stupid."
Silra swallowed hard, fingers tracing the metallic object in the darkness—a fire suppression valve. "Working on it," she called back, already calculating angles and possibilities. "Just... give me sixty seconds." She pulled out her multitool, focusing on the mechanical problem instead of the impending doom.
The wardstone pulsed again, louder this time—and something shifted in the floor beneath her. Water gushed through a new crack, spraying up from between concrete slabs like a geyser. "Fuck!" Silra yelped, scrambling back as the sudden flood soaked her already wet clothes and sent her sliding across the slick surface.
The water poured in with terrifying speed now, filling the chamber within seconds. She was trapped in a rising pool of frigid liquid, concrete walls closing in on all sides while the building groaned overhead like a monster preparing to devour its prey. Her fingers found the fire suppression valve again—her only potential solution—and she started working furiously, teeth gritted against the panic that threatened to overwhelm her.
The water rose past her knees, then her thighs, cold and relentless. She could hear Jeane shouting something through the barrier but couldn't make out the words over the roar of rushing water and creaking structure. The multitool slipped in her wet hands as she fought to unscrew the valve cover—fuck, fuck, fuck.
Finally, the cover came loose with a satisfying pop. Inside was a red handle connected to a network of pipes. She yanked it hard, praying...
Nothing happened for a agonizing second—and then white foam erupted from the walls and ceiling like a fire extinguisher on steroids. The expanding foam filled the chamber instantly, rising faster than the water could flow in. Silra found herself trapped inside a rapidly solidifying marshmallow-like substance that was both terrifying and miraculous.
The foam hardened around her, sealing off the water's entry points and creating a stable bubble of air in the middle of the flooding tunnel. She was encased like a bug in amber, but at least she wasn't drowning anymore. The wardstone pulsed again, vibrating through the concrete around her—but the foam seemed to dampen the effect slightly.
"Jeane?" Silra called out, voice muffled by her concrete cocoon. "I... I think I found something. You okay?"
The response came back after a moment, equally distorted: "We're fine. The barrier's holding for now." A beat of silence, then: "What the fuck did you do back there? Sounds like a science experiment gone wrong."
"Improvised structural support," Silra replied, trying to inject some confidence into her voice despite being trapped in a rapidly cooling foam prison. "Give it about five minutes to set completely and we should have a stable path forward." She hoped.
"Stable until what?" Jeane demanded. "Until the rest of the building collapses around us? Until the wardstone energy finds a new way to kill us? Until—"
"Until I figure out how to get us all out alive," Silra cut in sharply, her patience fraying. "Now shut up and let me think." She settled into an uncomfortable position inside her concrete womb, mind racing through possibilities while water continued to rise around her.
The wardstone pulsed again, louder than ever—but the foam seemed to absorb some of the energy, creating a strange cocoon of relative safety in the middle of disaster. Silra allowed herself a small smile despite the situation. At least she'd bought them some time. Now to figure out what to do with it...
