Round 188

Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

Silra dropped into darkness behind them, squeezing through gaps in floorboards while the wardstone pulsed like a heartbeat matching the building's death rattle. The service tunnel was narrow, choked with dust and the smell of old water damage—better than facing whatever waited beyond that door. The structure groaned above her as she crawled forward, fingers finding rusted pipes and crumbling insulation. Water seeped through here too, but it was controlled chaos compared to their situation.
Jeane's voice echoed distantly, strained with effort and something else—fear? frustration? or maybe the demonic energy feeding on her panic. The wardstone pulsed again, louder this time, and Silra felt it in her teeth like a dental drill at high speed. She pressed forward faster, boots splashing in standing water.
Halie shifted her grip on the mirror, trying desperately to brace the door against the increasing wardstone energy and the ominous groans of the collapsing building. Her burned hands screamed in protest, but she gritted her teeth. 'This isn't working,' Halie called out, frustration evident in her voice. 'The floor's too slick with water and... other fluids. I can't get enough traction.' She glanced back at Hera pressed against her, then to Jeane struggling with the dildo and demonic power. 'Unless...
Silra froze mid-crawl, the implications of Halie's unfinished sentence hanging in the air like a physical weight. She knew what that 'Unless' meant—using the very thing they were trying to escape as a tool for survival. It was the kind of desperate calculus that led to long-term problems, but right now? The building was coming down around them, and Jeane's magic was their only hope.
She reversed direction, crawling back toward the dim light ahead where her companions waited. 'Wait,' Silra called out, voice barely carrying over the groaning structure. 'There might be another way.' She emerged into the makeshift barricade area, water dripping from her chin and elbows. 'I found a maintenance tunnel behind us—narrow, but passable. We can go back the way we came instead of facing whatever's beyond that door.'
Halie stared at her, mirror slipping in her hands again. Behind them, the wardstone pulsed once more, a low thrum that vibrated through the floorboards. 'But going back means—' Halie began, then stopped. Meant using the very thing they were trying to escape. Silra nodded grimly. 'I know. But staying here means certain death when this building collapses. At least in the tunnel we have a chance to outrun the collapse and find another way down.'
Jeane looked up from her struggle with the dildo, face flushed and eyes wild. 'And what happens when we run out of tunnel? We'll still be trapped in a collapsing building with no exit.' She clutched the sex toy tighter, demonic energy crackling around her fingers. 'This... this thing... it's hungry. But it's also powerful. Maybe—'
'No,' Silra cut her off sharply. 'We don't use that. Not here. Not now. The risk is too great—you're already losing control.' She crawled closer, keeping her distance but speaking firmly. 'Listen to me. We have a better option. A slow crawl through a narrow tunnel is better than a fast fall down twenty floors of collapsing concrete.'
Halie's grip slipped again, and the mirror shifted dangerously. Another loud creak echoed from above as more debris rained down around them. 'I can't hold it much longer,' she gasped. 'The floor's giving way.'
Silra made her decision in a split second. She lunged forward, grabbing Halie's arm with one hand and yanking hard while simultaneously shoving the mirror back into place with her other. The sudden movement sent them both sprawling backward into the water-filled tunnel, but they were clear of the collapsing barricade area just as the floor gave way completely behind them.
The wardstone's pulse turned into a furious roar as their makeshift door disappeared into a cascade of rubble and concrete dust. But they were moving now, crawling frantically through the narrow maintenance shaft while the building groaned and screamed around them. Behind them, something massive shifted—steel groaning, concrete cracking—and then the entire world seemed to tilt sideways as the penthouse suite collapsed completely.
Silra didn't look back. She just kept crawling, water splashing around her elbows and knees, the sound of falling debris and crumbling structure filling her ears like the world's worst symphony. The tunnel was their lifeline now—narrow, claustrophobic, but solid in a way the rest of the building clearly wasn't.
They crawled for what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, the sounds of destruction growing fainter behind them with each desperate elbow push and knee thrust. Finally, ahead, Silra saw it—a grate, barely visible in the darkness, offering a glimmer of hope. An emergency exit. A way out.
She reached it first, fingers closing around rusted bars as she pulled herself forward. The grate gave way with a screech of protesting metal, and suddenly they were spilling out into the cool night air of a service alley behind the building. Far above, orange flames now licked at the edges of the penthouse suite, visible even through the smoke and dust billowing from the structure.
They sprawled on cold concrete, gasping for breath that didn't taste like dust and fear for once. Behind them, the building continued to groan and settle as it consumed itself from the inside out. But they were alive. They had escaped.
Silra rolled onto her back, staring up at the night sky while her chest heaved. That had been close—too close. She'd never been more grateful for her rogue training than in those moments of desperate escape through the collapsing building. And she knew, without a doubt, that they'd made the right choice. Using Jeane's demonic power would have solved one problem while creating a hundred others.
She glanced over at Halie, who was also catching her breath, and then at Jeane, who sat huddled against the wall with Hera clutched close. They were alive. That was enough for now. The rest could wait until they'd processed what had just happened—and what they'd left behind in that hellish penthouse suite.
