Round 149

Phase: converging

The building screamed its death rattle through every beam and bolt as the structure gave up the ghost floor by agonizing floor. Water from the shattered shower stall mixed with spilled lubricant to create a deadly slurry across the floorboards, turning traction into a distant memory. Halie slammed her weight against the door barricade, burned hands screaming protest but she barely felt it through the adrenaline and terror. The heavy mirror she'd braced the barrier with rocked dangerously each time the building bucked beneath them like a dying horse.
Silra stood frozen in the corridor darkness, every instinct screaming at her to run but knowing there was nowhere left to go that wasn't already collapsing or actively trying to kill them. The wardstone's pulse hammered through the air itself now—each beat stronger than the last, feeding on the building's death throes and Jeane's barely contained desperation. She could feel the sorceress's control fraying across their mental link, that dark hunger growing bolder with each passing second. If she lost it here, if that demonic nature broke free... there'd be no stopping her.
The door frame cracked under Halie's weight, splinters flying as the wood gave way around the hinges. She threw herself back instinctively, hands coming up to protect her face even as fresh agony lanced through her burned palms. The mirror crashed to the floor behind her, sliding across the slick surface to slam into the far wall with a sound like a gunshot. And in that moment of total structural failure, the door swung inward an inch before catching on the remaining hinge.
Darkness beyond seethed with palpable malevolence—wardstone energy bleeding out into the corridor like spilled oil across water. The air itself felt wrong, thick and resisting, pushing back against them as if the space didn't want to be invaded. Something moved in that darkness, shapes that had no right existing shifting just at the edge of visibility.
"Silra!" Halie gasped, voice cracking with fear and desperation. "Get back here! Now!"
The elf was already moving, boots finding purchase on the slick floor through sheer luck and adrenaline-fueled panic. She launched herself forward in a controlled slide, arms pinwheeling for balance as she skidded across the lubricant-slick surface toward where Halie crouched by the now-ajar door. The human woman's face was pale even in the dim emergency lighting—eyes wide with terror but jaw set in stubborn determination.
"Hold it closed!" Silra snarled, throwing her weight against the door beside Halie just as another massive groan tore through the building's frame. Wood splintered audibly somewhere above them—then the sound of concrete cracking like gunshots in rapid succession. Dust poured down from the ceiling in a thick choking cloud.
"Fuck!" Halie choked out, fresh blood welling from her split knuckles as she bore down against the door with everything she had. The remaining hinge screamed metal protest but held—barely. "Jeane! We need you!"
The sorceress materialized from the dust like a ghost, face strained with effort and something darker beneath—the wardstone's pulse was visible now as a sickly green glow emanating from her hands where they gripped the barrier spell. Her eyes were wild, pupils dilated, and for one terrifying moment Silra thought she might actually try to breach the door to get at what lay beyond.
"Don't you fucking dare," the elf hissed, shifting her position to wedge herself between Jeane and the gap in the door. "We don't need your help destroying this place—we need you to keep that thing contained!"
Jeane snarled something incoherent, muscles bunching beneath her skin as if fighting some internal war. The green glow intensified around her hands before subsiding with visible effort. She slammed a fist against the doorframe hard enough to crack the wood further.
"Fine!" she spat, voice rough with barely controlled rage. "But we need another way out—NOW! This building's coming down and I'd rather not die buried under concrete because you two couldn't find an escape route!"
Silra felt her stomach drop—because of course that was the part they hadn't solved yet. The entire floor plan was still a mystery beyond what they could see from their current position, and every second ticking by made the situation more desperate. The building groaned again, louder this time, and something heavy crashed to the floor above them.
"Working on it!" she snapped back, even as her mind raced through possibilities that all seemed equally suicidal. "Just... give me a minute!"
But they didn't have a minute. They didn't even have thirty seconds. The wardstone pulsed again—harder than ever before—and both Halie and Jeane cried out in pain as the energy feedback slammed into them through their palms. The door frame split completely this time, the remaining hinge tearing free with a sound like ripping cloth.
The darkness beyond surged forward as if hungry for release, tendrils of pure malevolent energy snaking out to caress the air around them. Something laughed—high and wrong and inhuman—and then everything went to hell all at once.
