Round 148

Phase: converging

The wardstone pulsed again, harder this time—teeth sinking deeper into stone, into my will, into everyone's nerves. The corridor beyond the door shifted in the bad light, shadows congealing into something that breathed with purpose. Jeane held the shield spell with every fiber of her being, sweat beading on her skin despite the cold.
"Silra," she hissed, voice barely carrying over the building's groan. "Return to us immediately." The elf's hesitation was a chasm opening in their already precarious situation. Each second stretched into eternity as the wardstone fed on the building's structural stress, growing stronger with every pulse. Jeane could feel her control slipping—demonic nature warring against sorcerous discipline as the temptation grew stronger.
The makeshift barricade creaked under Halie's weight as the human woman strained against the door. "Silra!" she called out, voice tight with fear. "Come back! We can find another way down!" Her burned hands screamed in protest but she pushed harder, knowing every second counted. The floor beneath them was slick with spilled lubricant and water from the broken shower stall—one wrong move could send her sliding into the darkness beyond.
Hera hesitated, torn between following Silra's lead and obeying Jeane's command. The wardstone's pulse came again, stronger this time, and she felt it in her teeth like a physical vibration. She glanced at Jeane, maintaining the barrier with visible effort, then back at Halie bracing the door. "How much longer?" she asked, trying to keep the fear from her voice.
Jeane gritted her teeth against the strain of holding the spell. "Two minutes," she ground out. "Maybe three if we're lucky." The wardstone pulsed again, trying to break through her defenses. She could feel it feeding on the building's structural stress, growing stronger with each passing second. They had to move—now—but moving meant exposing themselves to whatever waited in that darkness.
The corridor beyond the door seemed to breathe in the bad light, shadows congealing into something that watched them with patient hunger. The wardstone's energy called out like a beacon, promising power and corruption in equal measure. Jeane felt her control slipping with each pulse—demonic nature warring against sorcerous discipline as the temptation grew stronger.
"Abby," Hera said softly, reaching for Halie's hand despite the danger of touching her corrupted skin. "We have to trust them." Her voice trembled but resolve steadied it. She knew Silra wouldn't lead them wrong—trusted the elf's mechanical mind even if her own instincts screamed otherwise.
Halie hesitated only a moment before gripping Hera's hand tightly. The touch sent a jolt through her—Silra's corruption still active in her system—but she ignored the pain, focusing on the warmth of Hera's fingers against hers. "Together," she said firmly, and braced herself for what came next.
The wardstone pulsed again, harder this time, and something deep within the building gave way with a sound like tearing metal. Dust rained from the ceiling as the floor shifted beneath their feet. They were out of time—had to move now or be buried alive. Jeane gritted her teeth against the strain of maintaining the spell one more second... two...
"NOW!" she shouted, and released the barrier just as Halie threw her weight against the door. The makeshift barricade burst inward with a crash of splintering wood and sliding furniture, sending them stumbling into the dark corridor beyond.
The wardstone's energy surged forward like a physical tide—cold and wrong and hungry—but Jeane had already cast a new shield spell to contain it, barely holding back the corruption as they stumbled deeper into the darkness. The building groaned around them, something massive shifting in its foundations as the first concrete began to crumble behind where they'd been standing.
They were trapped now—no safe way out, no easy solution—but at least they were still alive. For now.
