Round 150

Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The building's death rattle crescendoed into a groan that shook plaster dust free from the ceiling. The corridor floor tilted visibly beneath their feet, water from the shattered shower stall mixing with spilled lubricant to create a deadly slurry across the boards. Halie slammed her weight against the door barricade, burned hands screaming protest but she barely felt it through the adrenaline and terror. The heavy mirror she'd braced the barrier with rocked dangerously each time the building bucked beneath them like a dying horse.
Silra stood frozen in the corridor darkness, every instinct screaming at her to run but knowing there was nowhere left to go that wasn't already compromised. The wardstone's energy pulsed through the stone again, closer this time—she could feel it vibrating up through the soles of her boots despite the slippery footing. "Jeane!" she called out, voice tight with barely controlled panic. "How long can you hold that shield? Because I'm not dying in a collapsed building full of sex toys and lubricant!"
The succubus woman across the corridor braced herself against the opposite wall, dark wings half-spread for balance as the floor shifted again. Her face was flushed, breathing ragged—controlling the barrier spell against the wardstone's energy was taking everything she had and then some. The magical workings crawled across her skin like living shadows under the dim light, each pulse from the stone making them writhe anew. Blood trickled from one nostril where she'd bitten it holding back a scream.
"I can feel it," Jeane gasped, voice strained with effort. "Each pulse weakens the shield—I'm buying minutes now, not hours." She pushed off the wall and stumbled toward Silra through the slick water and lubricant mixture, wings tucked tight against her back for balance. "We need to move. Now. The wardstone's energy is seeping through the door frame cracks—if it touches me directly..." Her eyes glowed crimson with barely contained power. "...then you've got a much bigger problem than a collapsing building."
Halie redoubled her efforts against the barricade, muscles burning as she fought to keep the door closed despite the wardstone's energy trying to force it open from the other side. The mirror brace shifted ominously under her weight—one more good hit and it would collapse completely. She could feel the corruption bleeding through the cracks now, cold and wrong against her palms.
"Hera!" she shouted over her shoulder again. "Stay back! Don't touch anything near the door!" The human woman's face was pale with fear but her grip on the makeshift barricade never wavered despite the agony in her burned hands. "We can hold this—I think—if we work together!"
Across the corridor, Jeane finally reached Silra and grabbed her arm with a grip like iron. The elf yelped at the contact—Jeane's skin was burning hot from magical exertion, sweat beading on her exposed chest where her robes had slipped during the struggle to maintain the barrier spell. "Listen," the succubus hissed urgently, crimson eyes locked on Silra's face. "I need you to do something for me."
"What?" Silra demanded, trying to ignore how close Jeane was standing and how much she radiated desperate energy.
"I need you to get Halie and Hera out of here," Jeane said, voice low and intense. "The wardstone's energy is too strong—I can't maintain the shield forever. If it touches me directly..." She trailed off, leaving the implications hanging in the air between them. "You're the only one who can move through this building fast enough to get them to safety before it collapses completely."
Silra stared at her for a long moment, processing the implications. "And you?" she asked finally.
"I'll hold the shield as long as I can," Jeane replied grimly. "But someone needs to be here to contain the wardstone energy if the barrier fails." Her wings flexed restlessly behind her—fear response or barely controlled magical backlash, it was hard to tell which. "Go. Now. Before this whole fucking building comes down around our ears."
The corridor floor shifted again with a groan of stressed timber, water from the broken shower stall sloshing across the slick surface beneath their feet. Silra didn't need convincing after that—she wrenched her arm free and sprinted toward Halie's position at the barricaded door without looking back. Jeane watched her go for one second before turning her attention back to the barrier spell, teeth grinding as another wardstone pulse hammered against her magical defenses.
This was going to be close. Too fucking close. She could feel the corruption seeping through the cracks in her concentration with each passing heartbeat—if she lost control of this spell for even a moment, everything would cascade faster than she could stop it. The building groaned again, louder this time, and fresh plaster dust rained down from the ceiling. Yeah. Real fucking close.
Across the corridor, Silra skidded to a halt beside Halie just as another wardstone pulse hit. The human woman's burned hands were white-knuckled on the mirror brace, muscles trembling with effort. "We need to move," the elf said urgently. "Now. Jeane can't hold that shield much longer—we have maybe two minutes before this entire floor collapses."
Halie stared at her for a split second before nodding sharply. "Hera!" she called back over her shoulder. "We're leaving! Grab onto me and don't let go!"
The civilian woman scrambled forward immediately, face pale with fear but eyes bright with desperate hope. She crashed into Halie's back just as the human woman released the barricade and turned to run—momentum slammed them both forward into the slick water-and-lubricant mixture on the corridor floor. They went down hard, sliding uncontrolled toward the dark doorway where Jeane stood maintaining her barrier spell.
Silra cursed and lunged forward, grabbing Hera's arm just before she could collide with the wardstone energy bleeding through the door frame. The woman screamed as they both hit the ground sliding, feet flailing for purchase on the impossibly slick surface. The corridor floor chose that exact moment to tilt violently downward toward the doorway—the entire structure groaning like a dying beast as support beams finally gave way beneath them.
Jeane saw it happening in slow motion: Silra and Hera sliding helplessly toward her position, Halie trying desperately to stop their momentum but the compromised floor giving out completely. Her wings snapped wide instinctively—fuck containment, fuck control, fuck everything—and she threw herself forward with every ounce of succubus strength.
The spell holding the wardstone energy back shattered completely as she moved, magical backlash exploding outward like a physical force. But she was already in motion, arms wrapping around Silra and Hera mid-slide just as the floor beneath them vanished entirely. The three women tumbled forward through empty air into the stairwell below—Jeane's wings beating frantically to slow their fall even as the entire structure above them began a controlled demolition cascade.
They hit the landing two floors down hard enough to crack concrete, Jeane taking the brunt of the impact with her wings and body wrapped protectively around the others. Dust and debris rained down around them as the penthouse floor above collapsed inward on itself, wardstone energy contained in the falling rubble instead of being released into the building proper.
Silra lay stunned for a moment before adrenaline kicked back in—she scrambled off Jeane and checked Hera first, then Halie. All three were alive, mostly uninjured beyond existing injuries, and the wardstone was contained in the collapsing debris pile above them instead of loose in the building. She looked up at Jeane, who was already climbing shakily to her feet with concrete dust coating everything.
"Thanks for the save," she said, voice rough with adrenaline and lingering fear. "Though I'm not sure which was more terrifying—falling through the floor or being this close to you when your wings are out."
Jeane glared at her, brushing concrete off her robes and trying to ignore how much her control had slipped in front of everyone. "Shut up," she snapped. "We're not done yet." She turned to survey the damage—smoke and dust filled the stairwell above them, emergency lighting casting everything in harsh shadows. The building was still settling with small collapses and groans of stressed structure.
"We need to get out before this whole thing comes down," Jeane continued, already moving toward the stairs below. "And we need to find a way to contain that wardstone permanently or every emergency service in New York is going to show up here." She paused at the top of the next flight down and looked back at the others. "Anyone injured worse than they were before?"
Halie shook her head, though her burned hands were already starting to blister further from the concrete dust abrasion. Hera clutched her arm tightly but seemed otherwise unharmed—just thoroughly terrified. Silra flexed her own muscles and found everything still working despite the fall.
"Then let's move," Jeane said grimly. "Stay close, stay quiet, and for fuck's sake try not to touch anything else that looks magical or suspicious." She started down the stairs at a fast walk, wings tucked tight against her back again but still visible—their presence a constant reminder of how much control she'd lost during the collapse.
The other three women followed in quick order, none of them wanting to linger in a structurally compromised building with a contained wardstone above them. The emergency lighting cast long shadows on the walls as they descended—each floor looking more and more like a disaster zone than an actual living space. Jeane led the way down three more flights before pausing at a service door that opened onto what looked like a maintenance corridor.
"This should take us to the ground level mechanical rooms," she said quietly, already checking the lock mechanism with practiced ease. "We can access the building's emergency systems from there—shut off power to the upper floors, trigger sprinklers if needed, that kind of thing." She glanced back at the others. "And maybe find a way to contain that wardstone permanently before it decides to collapse the entire building around us."
No one argued with that plan—as much as they wanted out of this death trap, leaving the wardstone behind was a far worse option than dealing with structural collapse cleanup. Jeane worked the lock quickly and silently—her succubus nature giving her hands both finesse and strength for the task despite her earlier magical exertion.
The door opened onto a narrow concrete corridor lined with pipes and electrical conduits, emergency lighting casting everything in harsh shadows. The sound of distant sirens filtered through the walls—someone had definitely called emergency services by now, though hopefully they hadn't breached the upper floors yet.
Jeane led the way into the corridor and pulled the door mostly closed behind them, leaving it cracked open just enough to hear what was happening upstairs. "Alright," she said quietly, leaning against the wall beside the door. "This is our safe space for now—wardstone energy won't penetrate concrete this thick easily, and we're far enough down that the building collapsing above us won't be immediate danger."
Halie slid down to sit on the floor across from her, burned hands cradled against her chest. "How long do you think we have before someone tries to come through that door?" she asked quietly.
Jeane shrugged, already running calculations in her head. "Depends on how fast emergency services respond and whether they're stupid enough to try the upper floors first." She met Halie's eyes across the narrow corridor space. "If I had to guess? We've got maybe thirty minutes before someone tries to open that door from the other side looking for survivors or assessing structural damage."
Silra leaned against the opposite wall, arms crossed over her chest and expression carefully neutral—though anyone who knew her well enough could see the lingering adrenaline shake in her posture. "And if they do?" she asked quietly.
"Then we deal with it," Jeane replied without hesitation. "We're not leaving this building until that wardstone is contained properly—meaning either destroyed or sealed away somewhere it can't affect anyone else." She pushed off the wall and started pacing the narrow space, wings shifting restlessly behind her. "Which means we need to find a way to access whatever emergency systems control the upper floors from here."
Halie nodded slowly, already thinking through the implications. "And if those systems are locked or require authorization?" she pressed.
Jeane's lips curled in something that might have been a smile if it wasn't so predatory. "Then we get creative," she said simply. "Because I'd rather deal with breaking into building security than explaining to emergency responders why there's a succubus and wardstone involved in whatever the fuck just happened upstairs."
Silra snorted despite herself—she couldn't help admiring Jeane's complete lack of hesitation when it came to problems that required either magic or technical solutions. The woman might be a walking disaster waiting to happen half the time, but when shit got real? She delivered.
"Fine," she said finally, pushing off her own wall and moving toward the corridor's far end where electrical panels and circuit breakers were visible. "But if we're doing this, we do it smart—no unnecessary risks, no heroics, and absolutely no one finds out what actually happened up there." She met Jeane's eyes across the narrow space. "Agreed?"
Jeane nodded once, sharp and decisive. "Agreed," she said simply. And then she turned to follow Silra toward the electrical panels, already running through potential security protocols and magical workarounds in her head. Because despite everything that had just gone wrong—despite nearly losing control completely, despite almost dying in a building collapse—they were still in this together. Still functional as a team even if barely holding it together.
And right now? That was enough. For now.
