Round 49 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At The base of a crumbling stone tower, the shared situation sharpens into an immediate decision point. What is already in motion no longer supports waiting or circling. The next concrete move will determine how this scene changes.
I can feel the wards' hunger intensifying, feeding on some ancient darkness inside the tower. This is wrong—too organized, too fast for mere undead guardians. Whatever's coming down those stairs isn't mindless bone. It's something deliberate. We need to decide now: accelerate through ground-level entry before it reaches us, or back out while still mostly hidden. Either way, the time for hesitation is past.
I see what's happening here. The wards aren't barriers—they're feeding troughs. And whatever they're feeding... is coming downstairs for seconds. Jeane steps forward, crossbow leveled at the tower door, her dark eyes scanning the shadows. We have two minutes before that thing decides whether to invite us in or drag us out. I say we accelerate through ground-level entry—find a way inside now while it's still descending—and secure the stairs behind us. If we back away undetected, we lose our chance at the sword and give whatever's upstairs time to fortify its position or send something worse after us. She glances at Merrin. What did you see through that window? Was it skeletal? Undead? Or was there intelligence in that movement? The ward-stones pulse faster now, almost panting with anticipation. Jeane feels the rhythm through her boots—frantic, hungry. We're already in its territory. Every second we stand here is a favor granted to whatever's feeding these wards. I'd rather face it on our terms than wait for it to finish digesting and come down looking for dessert. Her wings shift restlessly beneath her cloak. Move now or back off—either way, we're making a choice. I'm not interested in being menu items.
I step back from the window, my heart pounding in my chest. "Whatever you were going to do in there... forget it," I say breathlessly. "We need to move now before whatever's upstairs decides we're its next meal!"
My hands tremble slightly as I grip the crossbow tighter. The wards' pulses have quickened to a frantic rhythm, sending waves of wrongness through my bones. I turn to Jeane, my eyes wide with urgency. "Jeane, whatever that thing is... it's coming faster than I'd like. We need a plan, now!"
I glance at Varrika, who's already moved to face the door, mace in hand. Her stance is coiled, ready for action. I nod approvingly at her position, grateful for her protectiveness. My gaze darts to Seraphine, worry etched on my face. "Seraphine, can you do anything to slow that thing down? Buy us some time?" I ask, hoping her arcane knowledge might provide a solution. As I speak, I'm already moving, positioning myself to cover the opposite side of the door from Varrika. My eyes scan the room, looking for any other potential threats or exits we might have missed in our initial survey. The tension in the air is palpable, the wards' hunger pulsing like a heartbeat counting down to an unknown doom. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. We're out of time for cautious exploration; now it's all about survival and getting what we came for before whatever's upstairs decides to come down and claim us as its own.
