The tower's ancient stones groan under the weight of centuries, and something shifts inside—something heavy, something deliberate. The air grows thick with the scent of old dust and something else, something wrong. The three women stand in tense formation at the base, their breaths visible in the sudden chill.

Halie, the cleric, presses her silver cross necklace between her fingers, a gesture of prayer or protection—it's hard to tell which. Her blue-grey eyes scan the tower's facade, searching for movement, for any sign of what stirs within. "This is no ordinary haunting," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can feel it feeding—the wards aren't barriers, they're... something else." She takes a step back instinctively.

Jeane, the tall winged succubus woman, stands closest to the tower door, her crimson eyes narrowed in concentration. Her dark leathery wings are half-spread, ready for flight or defense. A crossbow rests steady in her hands, aimed at the heavy wooden barrier that separates them from whatever lies beyond. "The spellwork is... alive," she mutters, more to herself than to the others. "And it's hungry." Her voluptuous form tenses visibly as another ward pulse echoes through the stone.

Merrin, the wiry halfling scout woman, moves with quick efficiency to position herself beside a narrow window, her dark eyes darting between the interior and her companions outside. She's already mapped most of the ground-level wards in her mind—suspicious stones arranged in patterns that suggest purpose rather than decay. But now, every pulse feels like a heartbeat counting down.

The decision point hangs heavy between them: accelerate through the ground level, risking detection but potentially bypassing the ward system entirely? Or wait for Jeane's aerial scouting, which could provide crucial intelligence... at the cost of more time and feeding?

The wards pulse again, stronger this time, vibrating through the soles of their boots. Something shifts inside the tower—a heavy thud, like a great weight being moved. They have seconds to choose before whatever's upstairs decides they're not just trespassers anymore.

The air grows colder still, and Halie finds herself praying—not for salvation, but for clarity. What do we do? she thinks, her fingers tightening around the cross. The answer might very well determine whether they leave this place alive—or become another feeding story for these ancient stones to whisper.
