The tower's magic breathed around them now—not static wards but living things feeding on something within. Seraphine felt it crawl across her skin as she descended the stone steps, her elegant robes marked by travel and sleepless study. The ward pulse had changed rhythm, slow and deliberate, no longer random fluctuations but a steady hungry beat. She watched Jeane circle above, the tall succubus woman's dark leathery wings cutting the air silently, her crimson eyes scanning every inch of the crumbling facade.

Fifteen minutes. That was their window—fifteen minutes before whatever slept inside decided whether to ignore them or... not. The wards weren't barriers meant to keep out; they were predators designed to feed on something within and defend their master's territory. And now they knew someone was snooping at the edges of their hunting ground.

Seraphine's fingers traced the cover of her spellbook, worn leather under her touch. She'd seen active predatory magic before—dark sorcerers who bound spirits into wards that would hunt intruders and feed on their life force—but never anything this... hungry. Whatever slept upstairs wasn't just a dark mage; it was something older, more dangerous.

"Whatever's inside... it knows we're here now," she said quietly, her sharp elf eyes fixed on the upper windows. "These aren't defenses. They're pets." She moved to stand beside Halie, the weary human woman who'd been their spiritual anchor throughout the journey. "We need to map every ward signature completely before attempting entry—understand what we're dealing with first."

Halie nodded grimly, her blue-grey eyes scanning the tower's base. "Agreed. But we have fifteen minutes before whatever's inside decides whether we're worth waking for." She marked another suspicious stone slab with her mace—a potential pressure plate or hidden entrance. "Jeane, I need you to scout the upper floors without drawing attention to that main window. We're looking for hidden entrances, pressure plates—anything—that might let us slip inside before whatever's upstairs decides we're dinner guests."

The tall succubus woman descended in slow circles, her wings cutting the air silently. The tower's ward magic pulsed beneath her, slow and deliberate now—feeding something large inside. Fifteen minutes until it decided whether they were worth waking for or simply... ignoring. These weren't defenses. They were predators. And whatever slept up there had just stirred because its pets had caught their scent.

"Understood," Jeane replied, her voice barely audible even to the others' enhanced hearing. "I'll map every ward signature on the upper floors—find out what we're dealing with before we stumble into it." She began a slow, methodical ascent, her dark leathery wings beating almost silently as she circled the tower's crumbling facade.

Seraphine watched her go, a tightness in her chest. Jeane was their eyes above—but those wards pulsed hungrier with every passing moment. The elf woman turned to Halie. "We need to decide—do we attempt a ground-level perimeter check with Merrin and Varrika while Jeane maps the upper floors? Or do I join her aerial scouting while you remain here with the others?"

Halie considered, her expression stern despite the weariness in her eyes. The decision weighed heavily—they needed both perspectives, but splitting the group increased the risk of individual members stumbling into traps or worse. "I'll remain here," she finally said. "You join Jeane—two sets of eyes are better than one when dealing with arcane hazards. But be careful. Those wards aren't just watching; they're hungry."

Seraphine nodded, already moving toward the tower's edge where Jeane had last circled. The magic pulsed around her, a living thing tasting the air for intruders. She drew her spellbook closer, fingers tracing protective runes as she prepared to ascend into the predator's territory.
