The air crackles with ancient energy, each ward a hungry mouth waiting to close. Varrika hefts her mace, the familiar weight grounding her against the tower's predatory aura. The runes crawl across the stone like insects in moonlight, their pattern a maze designed for failure. She spits on the ground, a dwarf's prayer for luck. "This place feels wronger than a three-legged stool with no center post." Her scarred fingers tighten around the weapon's haft.

Merrin steps closer to the wall, her rogue's eyes scanning every inch of stonework. She traces a rune with one finger, feeling the magic pulse against her skin like a heartbeat. "These aren't defensive wards," she says softly. "They're feeding wards—connected to something inside." She glances back at Halie and Jeane. "We need to map them completely before we try entry, or they'll detect us."

Halie nods, already moving into position for her spellcasting. "Five minutes of quiet focus," she reminds them. "Don't start mapping until I'm done." She draws power from her goddess, the air around her hands shimmering with divine light that seems to push back against the tower's darkness.

Merrin crouches low, beginning a careful perimeter check with Varrika mirroring her movements on the opposite side. They work in silence, marking each ward's position and strength with gestures only they understand. The dwarf's heavy footsteps contrast sharply with the halfling's near-silent progress, both hunters stalking through enemy territory.

As Halie completes her spell, the three women gather to compare notes. The map of wards is a web of hunger, designed to consume any who enter. But there—between two particularly weak points—might be a chink in the tower's defenses. Merrin traces the path with her finger. "If we can disable these two sections temporarily," she says, "we might have a narrow window to slip inside."

Varrika grunts, unimpressed. "And how do we disable them without setting off every other ward in the place?" Her grey eyes are hard as flint.

Merrin meets her gaze steadily. "Magic and misdirection. Jeane can create a distraction high up—something loud enough to draw the wards' attention away from our entry point." She looks to Halie. "You can suppress the detection radius of these two specific wards for a few minutes with your divine power, right?"

Halie nods slowly, already calculating the spell requirements. "I can do it, but it'll leave me vulnerable while casting. Someone needs to guard my back."

Varrika snorts. "Not exactly my specialty, staying put while others do the sneaky work." But she moves to stand beside Halie anyway, her mace ready. The dwarf may prefer a direct approach, but she understands the need for subtlety when facing magic this powerful.

Merrin turns to Jeane, her expression serious. "Think you can handle the distraction? Something flashy and loud, but controlled enough not to collapse the whole ward system."

Jeane grins, already conjuring ideas in her mind. "Leave it to me," she says, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes despite the gravity of their situation. "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve that should do the trick." She begins gathering arcane energy, preparing for her role in this dangerous ballet.

As the plan solidifies, the tower seems to loom larger overhead, its hunger growing more palpable with each passing moment. The women exchange grim looks—this will be their best chance, but it won't be easy. The wards feed on something dark and ancient, and they're about to walk right into its lair.

But there's no turning back now. The Time-Splitting Sword awaits, and they've come too far to hesitate. With careful coordination and a healthy dose of luck, maybe they can slip past the tower's ravenous defenses without becoming just another meal for the hungry magic that guards its secrets.
