The tower loomed overhead like a patient predator, its ancient stonework weathered by centuries of wind and neglect. Yet something else animated this place—the dark magic thrumming beneath the surface, feeding on whatever lies trapped within those walls. The runes etched into the crumbling steps pulsed with a malevolent light in the moonlight, each symbol a link in some forgotten chain of power.

Halie moved to the fore, her heavy mace gripped firmly, silver holy symbol clutched in her other hand like a talisman against the oppressive atmosphere. "We can't just stand here debating," she said, her voice carrying more firmness than fatigue despite their long journey. "Jeane's right—the wards are feeding on whatever's trapped in there. But we didn't come all this way to turn back now." Her gaze shifted to Merrin and Jeane in turn, a silent question hanging between them: what's the next move?

Merrin crouched low beside the entrance steps, her nimble fingers tracing the intricate patterns of dark runes etched into the stone. A frown furrowed her brow as she concentrated, rogue's intuition warring with the obvious danger of direct contact. "These aren't just wards," she muttered. "They're... alive somehow. Drawing power from inside."

Jeane circled the perimeter slowly, her demon wings tucked close against the evening chill as she tracked the pulses of dark energy bleeding through the ancient masonry. The stone of this tower wasn't just old—it was hungry. She marked each ward with a flicker of arcane sight—three at cardinal points, two more at irregular intervals that suggested deliberate misdirection rather than mere decay.

"We need to map these exactly," Halie said, her voice low and urgent. "I can cast a protective ward over us, but it'll take five minutes of quiet focus. We can't have anyone stumbling into these things while I'm mid-spell." She turned to Seraphine. "You get one aerial pass, but stay above the ward lines I marked on the ground. The moment anything pulls at your magic, abort and land. I've cast this protection spell before, but never felt it draw like this—I'm not sure what's feeding it here."

Jeane nodded, already calculating the safest flight path. "Understood. One pass, high and fast." She launched into the air, her dark leathery wings beating steadily as she gained altitude. The tower's hunger was palpable from above—an insatiable void that seemed to suck at her arcane power with each beat of her wings.

Merrin and Varrika moved in tandem, marking the ward locations with small stones from their packs. The patterns were clear now: a star formation centered on the main entrance, with two additional points flanking the western side. "This is deliberate," Merrin said, standing back to assess their work. "Whoever designed this wanted to contain something specific inside."

Halie completed her spell, a shimmering dome of pale light enveloping the party. She staggered slightly as the magic drew on her reserves—this was far more demanding than her usual protections. "Whatever's in there," she gasped, "it's not just trapped. It's... nourishing this place."
