The wards pulsed again, no longer trying to keep out intruders but actively feeding them power. The magic felt wrong—hungry, alive in a way that made the skin crawl. "This is bad," Halie muttered, her cleric's senses screaming alarm. "The tower isn't just haunted—it's being powered by something new."

Varrika crouched at the edge of the hidden pit, crossbow aimed down into the depths. She took a deep breath, her muscles tensing as she listened for any sign of movement from below. "Jeane!" she called out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Answer me if you can hear me." The air was heavy, thick with decay and something else—old stone and fresh blood maybe? She muttered a curse under her breath.

Merrin shifted beside her, the elf's face pale in the gloom. "Wait," Seraphine hissed, stepping forward with her staff raised. The runes on its shaft pulsed in sync with the wards—matching rhythm, not opposing forces. "This isn't ancient magic," she said, voice tight with realization. Seraphine began chanting, her voice low and urgent as she drew on what little clean magic remained in this corrupted place. The runes on her staff flared to life once more, casting flickering blue-grey light across the chamber's edge. Varrika could feel the dark energy concentrating below them, drawing power from the corrupted wards to fuel whatever horrors awaited in the pit's depths.

Jeane's voice echoed up again, barely audible over the sound of her own rapid breathing. "Varrika? Merrin? Can you hear me?" The torch flickered, guttering low—two minutes maybe before it went out completely. She pressed herself flat against the wall, wings half-spread for balance as she gauged the distance between herself and the wall behind her. One wrong move and she'd be trapped against the stone, helpless before whatever else might await in this cursed place.

Varrika leaned closer to the edge, peering down into the darkness below. "Jeane!" she called out. "Answer me if you can hear me." The scraping sound echoed up from the dept...
