The wards pulsed, no longer trying to keep out intruders but actively feeding them power. The magic felt wrong—hungry, alive in a way that made the skin crawl. "This is bad," Halie muttered, her cleric's senses screaming alarm. "The tower isn't just haunted—it's being powered by something new." She adjusted her grip on her heavy mace. "We need to be smart about this. Varrika, keep your crossbow ready and watch Jeane's pit opening closely." Her blue-grey eyes fixed on the darkness below.

Varrika crouched at the edge of the pit, crossbow aimed down into the depths. The air was thick with decay and something else—old stone and fresh blood maybe? She muttered a curse under her breath. "Something's down there alright," she said, voice rough. "And it don't like us much." Merrin shifted beside her, the elf's face pale in the gloom.

"Wait," Seraphine hissed, stepping forward with her staff raised. The runes on its shaft pulsed in sync with the wards—matching rhythm, not opposing forces. "This isn't ancient magic," she said, voice tight with realization. "The tower's core enchantments are active and... feeding something new." She turned to Halie. "We need to find Jeane before whatever's down there adapts to our presence."

"Jeane!" Merrin called out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. Silence answered for a long moment, then a faint response drifted up from below. "I'm here! The pit goes deep—at least thirty feet down. There's... movement below." Her voice cracked with fear.

Varrika shifted her aim, scanning the darkness. "Movement? What kind?" she growled.

"Skeletons," Jeane called back, her voice steadier now. "Undead guardians of the tower, reanimated by dark magic. But there's something else—heavier footsteps. Something bigger." A scraping sound echoed up from below, louder this time.

Halie raised her mace. "We need to get her out. Varrika, cover the pit edge—if anything climbs up, shoot it." He nodded grimly and shifted his stance, crossbow ready. Merrin drew her short sword, eyes fixed on the darkness beside Jeane's voice.

Seraphine began chanting, arcane syllables echoing off the stone. Her staff glowed with blue light as she prepared a spell. "I can open a teleportation portal to the surface," she said between verses. "But it requires line of sight and stable magical coordinates—if the tower's corruption interferes..."

The scraping sound below grew louder, accompanied by a dragging noise. Jeane spoke again, her voice strained: "They're moving. Multiple sets of footsteps. Whatever's down there is... coordinating." A heavy thud sounded from deep in the pit.

"We don't have time for experiments," Halie said sharply. "Varrika, Merrin—prepare to drop ropes and haul her up. Seraphine, if your spell works, be ready to cast immediately. Jeane, are you near any solid stone outcroppings? You can use them as handholds."

Silence answered, then a weak response: "I... I think so. About ten feet down there's a stone shelf." Her voice trembled. "But the floor is shifting—magic or something. It feels like the whole chamber is alive and hungry."

The scraping sound stopped abruptly. A deep, rattling voice echoed up from the pit: "Intruders. Leave now or join us in eternal service." The words seemed to emanate from the stone itself.

Varrika fired his crossbow without hesitation, the bolt disappearing into the darkness below. Merrin tensed beside him, sword ready. Halie raised his mace higher. Seraphine completed her spell with a sharp gesture, blue energy crackling around her staff.

"Jeane!" Halie shouted. "Grab onto anything solid and brace yourself!"

The stone shelf ten feet down was her only hope. Jeane reached out, fingers closing around the rough rock as the floor beneath her shifted again. The voice from below spoke once more: "Futile. You will all serve the tower's new master."

A heavy thud sounded from far below—something large had just fallen.?, the sound of cracking bone and splintering wood followed.?, a roar of agony, then silence.

"Jeane!" Merrin screamed.

"I'm here," she called back weakly. "Something... fell. Big something." Her grip on the stone shelf tightened. "The magic is changing—it feels... unstable."

Seraphine aimed her staff at the pit's edge. "Teleportation portal opening!" Blue light erupted from the tip of her staff, forming a shimmering gateway just large enough for a person to pass through.

"Now!" Halie shouted.

Jeane pulled herself up with desperate strength, muscles burning as she climbed the rope Varrika had dropped. Her feet found purchase on the solid stone above the pit's edge just as the magical portal winked out behind her.

She collapsed onto the floor gasping for breath, covered in sweat and dust. The others gathered around her—Halie kneeling beside her with his mace still raised, Merrin dropping her sword to pull Jeane into a tight embrace, Varrika reloading his crossbow with grim efficiency, Seraphine lowering her staff with a look of profound relief.

"What happened down there?" Halie asked, his voice tight with barely contained fear.

Jeane took a shuddering breath before answering. "I think... I think the tower's core magic just... consumed itself." She sat up slowly, wincing at her protesting muscles. "The Skeletons were real—ancient guardians animated by dark magic. But whatever's been feeding this place recently... it's not undead." Her eyes met Halie's. "It's something else entirely. And it just... fell silent."

Seraphine stepped forward, her expression grave. "Consumed? You mean the dark magic source that was powering the Skeletons—gone?"

Jeane nodded slowly. "Gone. The wards stopped pulsing—the magic felt like it... imploded inward." She paused, choosing her words carefully. "I think whatever was controlling those guardians just... starved itself to death."

Halie sat back on his heels, lowering his mace with a shaky exhale. "So the tower is... empty?"

"No," Jeane said flatly. "It's not empty. It's hungry—and now it's got nothing left to feed on." She met each companion's eyes in turn. "We need to get out of here. Fast."

Varrika nodded grimly. "Agreed. But how? The only way down was that secret panel—"

Jeane cut him off with a sharp gesture, pointing at the wall beside them. A section of stone had shifted, revealing another hidden passage—this one leading up.

"It made a new exit," she said softly. "Whatever's in charge now... it wants us to leave."

The others stared at the newly revealed corridor, its depths shrouded in darkness. The silence from below was more ominous than any scraping sound had been.

"Well," Halie said finally, his voice regaining some of its usual steady tone. "I suppose that's an invitation." He stood and helped Jeane to her feet. "Let's take it before whatever replaced the Skeletons decides it was a mistake."

One by one they filed into the new passage, leaving the chamber of dead magic behind. The stone walls here felt different—as if the tower itself was holding its breath, waiting to see what would emerge from its depths next.

Jeane took up the rear, her hand still tight around the rope Varrika had used to pull her out. She glanced back once at the pit's edge before stepping into darkness, a small part of her wondering what had truly fallen silent down there—and whether silence was truly the same as death in this place.
