The air grew heavier with each step down the crumbling stone stairs, thick and cold like a tomb that had never known warmth. The sound of rushing water echoed up from below, growing louder with every careful footfall on ancient stone. Jeane's crossbow felt heavy in her hands, the metal cool against her skin as she descended into the darkness.

At the bottom, the narrow floor stretched out before her, lined with flickering torchlight and the eerie glow of pulsating runes carved deep into the walls. The ground vibrated faintly under her boots—dark energy feeding the ancient enchantments, perhaps, or something far more sinister. The magic here feels wrong, she thought, her crimson eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.

I'm down here, but it ain't pretty. Merrin's voice crackled over the comms, tight with barely contained panic. Place smells like a tomb... which I guess it is. Staircase crumbling under my boots. Keep an eye out above, yeah? Would hate for any of those skelly pals to join the party.

Jeane could almost see her—trapped below, fumbling for light in the darkness, desperate and alone. Focus, she told herself, pushing aside the urge to rush blindly after her friend. They needed information first, a plan.

The air grows heavier with each descent—cold and thick with decay. Her own words echoed back to her as she moved forward cautiously, crossbow ready. The ground beneath her feet seemed to pulse with dark energy, making the metal of her weapon vibrate slightly in her grip. The runes carved into the stone walls here are different—fresher, more active than the ancient wards above.

I peer into the depths of the hidden chamber, my gaze fixed on the eerie, pulsating runes that seem to dance along the ancient stone walls. Seraphine's voice joined the comms, her tone sharp with academic curiosity even as apprehension crept in. The air here is thick and heavy with an unfamiliar energy, unlike anything I've felt before in my studies of the arcane. It clings to my skin like a damp fog, raising the fine hairs on my arms.

I keep my crossbow trained on the shadows, scanning for any sign of those skeletal bastards. Varrika's gruff voice cut through next, her words carrying the weight of hard-won experience. The hair on the back of my neck is standing up—dark magic's thick in the air down there. I can feel it even from up here. cackles over comms Keep your wits about you. Something foul's at work in these ruins, and it's not just old magic left to rot.*

Jeane felt a chill run down her spine at Varrika's words—she knew that feeling all too well, the distinct taste of dark magic twisting ancient power for its own purposes. This wasn't just decay; something was actively feeding this corruption.

We should map this floor carefully before attempting any rescue. Halie's voice came next, steady and measured despite the obvious concern in her tone. Merrin's trapped, yes, but rushing in blindly serves no one. Varrika has the entrance secure—trust her strength and watch our backs. Sera...

Jeane could picture it—their leader standing at the top of the stairs, mace in hand, eyes scanning for threats while she tried to maintain order and morale. She knew Halie's worry was genuine, even if her calm voice betrayed little of it.

Focus on the task at hand, Jeane reminded herself, forcing her attention back to the pulsating runes and the faint sound of Merrin's breathing over the comms. They needed to map this floor, identify any threats or exits, and plan a careful extraction. The dark magic here was fresh and active—whatever had corrupted this tower was still present, still feeding its undead minions.

She moved forward cautiously, crossbow sweeping left to right as she advanced. The air grew colder still, the sound of rushing water louder now—a hidden stream or perhaps something more sinister feeding these ancient halls? The ground vibrated more intensely under her feet with each step.

This place is alive with dark energy, she thought, her stomach twisting with apprehension. And whatever's feeding it... we're not alone down here.
