Round 97 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin's touch activates the hidden pressure plates beneath the gate, causing the ancient runes to glow with an eerie light. The runes' hunger seems to intensify, and their writhing energy begins to push against the magical barrier, slowly weakening it. The ward's sentience grows more pronounced, its malevolent presence filling the air with an unshakeable sense of foreboding. As the runes continue to writhe, the air is filled with the faint scent of decay and corruption. The party can feel the weight of the ward's magic bearing down upon them, threatening to overwhelm their defenses. A low, ominous growl echoes through the stone tower, signaling that the unknown entity within is now fully aware of the group's presence. The gate's runes flicker wildly, their power waning as the ward's magic begins to unravel. The party must now decide how to proceed, as the barrier's weakening provides a narrow window of opportunity for escape or further exploration.
Varrika clenches her jaw, the heavy mace tight in her scarred hands as she watches Merrin step back from the writhing runes. The dwarf's eyes narrow, fixed on the gate as a low growl echoes through the stone tower. "Merrin," Varrika barks, "keep your hands off those runes until we understand what they are." She glances at Halie, who is mapping the ancient symbols. "Halie, can you tell us more about those marks? What are they feeding on?"
Varrika's gaze darts to Jeane and Seraphine as they search for alternative entrances. The tension in the air is palpable, the ward's sentience growing more pronounced with each passing moment. Varrika's battle-hardened instincts scream at her that something ancient and hungry waits beyond this gate. She steps forward, positioning herself between Halie and the corridor leading into the tower. "Whatever lies ahead, we face it together," Varrika growls, her gravel-edged voice steady despite the exhaustion weighing on her body. "But first, we need to understand our enemy. Halie, Merrin - work together to decipher those runes. Jeane, Seraphine - find us another way in if this path is blocked."
The dwarf's grip on her mace tightens as she stares at the pulsing runes. Whatever magic holds this tower, Varrika will not let it claim her or her companions. They will face this challenge head-on, armed with knowledge and the unbreakable bonds of their party. Varrika takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever horrors may lie ahead. "The thing inside is coming," she says quietly, her voice grim with determination. "We stand our ground. Together."
I circle the perimeter of the tower slowly, wings tight against my back for stealth despite the exhaustion dragging at me. The stone here feels wrong—cold in a way that burns with ancient power. I trace the mortar lines with my finger, careful not to touch any actual runes directly until we understand them. If this ward is as hungry as Halie says, I don't want to feed it accidentally. Merrin's already moving toward the gate again like a moth to flame. "Stay back," I call sharply, voice cutting through the heavy air. "That thing inside knows we're here now—the footsteps stopped when you triggered whatever that was under the gate." I focus on the stones themselves, trying to feel the flow of magic beneath them rather than just see it writhe across their surface like living sigils. The map Seraphine holds might as well be a child's drawing for all its accuracy. I point to what looks like a service entrance marked in faded ink near the tower's rear corner. "There—check that section. If the runes are weaker back there, we can try forcing entry without setting off every alarm spell this thing has." I don't want to be trapped between two active threats, especially not when my reserves are so low and Merrin's already proved she can't resist touching things. If the ward is truly sentient—truly starving—I need to understand what feeds it before we stumble into its dinner plate. The hunger Halie sensed doesn't feel natural, doesn't belong in a world where magic should have limits even for ancient towers. Whatever's inside, whatever priestess kept this thing alive all these years... I don't want our blood on her hands.
I stand motionless before the ancient gate, my eyes fixed on the writhing runes that cover its surface like a living carpet of thorny vines. The air crackles with a malevolent energy, a hunger so profound it seems to suck the very breath from my lungs.
"I can feel its hunger," I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. My voice is a low, strained murmur, barely audible over the distant sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the stone tower.
The runes pulse with an eerie light, their patterns shifting and twisting before my eyes. It's as if they're tasting the air itself, searching for something to feed upon. I take a step back, my heart hammering against my ribs.
This is no ordinary magical ward. This is a living thing, starving and desperate. And whatever it wants, whatever it needs to sustain its existence... we are standing right in its path.
"Varrika," I call out, my tone urgent but controlled. The dwarf turns to face me, her expression a mixture of exhaustion and grim determination.
"We need to find another way in. This ward... it's sentient. It's looking for something to feed on."
I gesture towards the gate, where Merrin stands frozen, her hand still outstretched towards the runes. She seems transfixed by their movement, oblivious to the danger.
"Merrin, get your hand away from there!" My voice rises to a sharp command, breaking through her trance-like state. She jerks her hand back as if scalded, stumbling into Jeane's waiting arms.
The sorcerer catches her easily, steadying her with a firm grip on her shoulders. Her eyes meet mine, a silent question passing between us. I nod once, a grim confirmation of my suspicions.
"It knows we're here," I say, turning to face the rest of the party. My gaze sweeps over Halie, who is frantically studying the map she holds in her trembling hands, and Varrika, whose grip on her hammer has tightened until her knuckles are white.
"I don't know what it wants, but I do know this - whatever lies beyond that gate, it's not going to be pleased to find us barging in unannounced. We need a plan. And we need to move fast."
I take another step back, my mind racing. The ward's sentience is growing stronger by the second, its presence a suffocating weight pressing down on us all. We are standing at the threshold of something ancient and terrible, and our next move could be the difference between survival and... whatever fate awaits those who disturb an awakened guardian.
