Varrika's scarred knuckles whiten on her mace as she watches Merrin step back from the writhing runes. "Merrin," Varrika barks, voice rough with barely contained worry, "keep your hands off those runes until we understand them." She glances at Halie, who is mapping the ancient symbols with careful precision. "Halie, can you tell us more about those marks? What are they feeding on?"
Jeane circles the perimeter of the tower slowly, wings tight against her back for stealth despite the exhaustion dragging at her. The stone here feels wrong—cold in a way that burns with ancient power. She traces the mortar lines with her finger, careful not to touch any actual runes directly until they understand them. If this ward is as hungry as Halie says, she doesn't want to feed it accidentally.
Seraphine stands motionless before the ancient gate, her eyes fixed on the writhing symbols that cover its surface like a living carpet of thorny vines. The air crackles with a malevolent energy, a hunger so profound it seems to suck the very breath from her lungs. "I can feel its hunger," she murmurs, more to herself than to anyone else. Her voice is a low, strained murmur, barely audible over the distant sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the stone tower. The runes pulse with an eerie light, their movements almost... deliberate. Sentient.
The ward's sentience grows more pronounced, its malevolent presence filling the air with an unshakeable sense of foreboding. As the runes continue to writhe, the air is filled with the faint scent of decay and corruption. The party can feel it now—a pulsing, insistent presence that seems to caress their skin with icy fingers.
Varrika shifts her grip on the heavy mace, muscles tensing beneath scarred skin. She positions herself between Halie and the corridor—a living wall of dwarven steel. "We need to move carefully," she rumbles, voice low and determined. "Whatever's inside that tower knows we're here now. We can't afford mistakes."*
Jeane's wings shift restlessly, her gaze flicking between Seraphine and the looming darkness beyond the gate. Thirty seconds might be enough if they're prepared—but they'd need a solid plan for what happens once they're inside. "Varrika," she calls sharply, crimson eyes bright with interest despite the obvious risks, "we can't all go through at once. The timing won't work."
Varrika nods grimly. "Agreed. So—what's our play? We can't all go through at once, not with that timeline."*
The ward's malevolent presence seems to pulse in anticipation, sensing the party's deliberation. It feeds on their indecision, growing stronger with each passing moment.
Seraphine straightens, her elegant robes marked by travel and sleepless study. "I can lead,"* she says firmly. "My spellcasting abilities might be able to temporarily shield us from any immediate threats inside. Jeane, you follow—"
Jeane cuts in sharply. "No. I go first." Her crimson eyes are hard as gems. "If there's something in there that only my sight can detect, I need to be through the barrier before it reactivates."
Varrika opens her mouth to object, but Halie steps forward, laying a hand on the dwarf's arm. "She's right," the cleric says softly. "We need her vision."
The wizard nods reluctantly. "Very well. Jeane leads, I follow, then Merrin—"
Merrin shakes her head vehemently. "No way. You two go next. I'll cover our rear."*
Varrika's scarred face splits in a fierce grin. "There's my girl," she rumbles approvingly.
The heavy footsteps inside the tower reach a new level of intensity—a heavy thud followed by the scrape of metal on stone. Something large is definitely approaching.
Seraphine takes a deep breath, her sharp elven features set in a mask of concentration. "The runes," she begins, voice low and urgent. "They're not just decorative—they're a key. A sequence that allows passage through the barrier."
Jeane leans forward, crimson eyes bright with interest despite the obvious risks. "Go on." The wizard gestures to the writhing symbols covering the gate. "I believe if we can decipher the correct sequence and activate them in the right order, we can temporarily disable the ward. Create a window of opportunity to slip inside before it reactivates."
Varrika's scarred brow furrows as she considers this. "How long would this window be? And what happens if we get the sequence wrong?"*
Seraphine's expression darkens slightly. "My estimates suggest perhaps thirty seconds. As for getting it wrong..." She trails off, then continues reluctantly. "The ward might become... more aggressive. Possibly even hostile."*
Jeane's wings shift restlessly, her gaze flicking between Seraphine and the looming darkness beyond the gate. "Thirty seconds might be enough if we're prepared," she muses. "But we'd need a solid plan for what happens once we're inside."
