The ancient gate's runes pulsed with a malevolent light, each glyph seeming to watch the party with hungry eyes. Varrika stepped forward, her heavy mace held at the ready, muscles tensing beneath scarred skin. "Careful, little one," she rumbled, more warning than nickname in her tone as Merrin's nimble fingers danced across the stone surface. The wiry halfling froze mid-probe, eyes widening as the ward's hum deepened into a low growl that vibrated through the very air.

Jeane moved closer, her crimson eyes narrowing as she studied the awakening symbols with the focused intensity of one who'd seen too many ancient horrors. "Stand back," she commanded softly, not unkindly. "Sentient wards require... delicacy." Her own wings shifted restlessly behind her, leathery membranes rustling like dry leaves in a storm wind.

The corridor beyond the gate remained oppressively silent save for the steadily approaching footsteps—click-clack of bone on stone that seemed to echo from both near and far simultaneously. Varrika's grip tightened on her mace handle. "Whatever's coming," she growled, more to herself than the others, "it ain't human anymore."

Merrin retreated a step, hands raised in placation to the stone gate as if it were some skittish beast. "Easy now, ye olde door," she murmured, half-joking, half-prayer. The runes' pulse quickened, almost excited by her words, their light intensifying until the entire barrier seemed to glow with an inner fire.

Jeane began sketching the patterns in midair with swift, precise gestures, arcane symbols trailing like starlight before fading. "This is beyond mere locking magic," she mused, more to herself than the others. "It... responds." The sorcerer's voluptuous frame tensed, her dark leathery wings half-spread as if ready for flight or combat.

Varrika shifted her weight, solid dwarf muscle coiled spring-tight beneath travel-stained armor. "We need to know what those footsteps are before we piss off whatever's guarding this door," she rumbled, eyes never leaving the corridor mouth. Merrin nodded, already scanning the ground for trap signs with predatory focus.

The ward's hum deepened further, vibrating through stone and bone alike—a hungry sound that spoke of patience worn thin by centuries of waiting. The party stood poised on the edge of revelation or disaster, tension thick enough to cut with a rusty dagger.
