The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

I stand alert, mace at the ready, as the strange pulsing of the runes grows more intense. The air feels thick with tension, the weight of ancient magic pressing down on us. I meet Halie's eyes, seeing the same apprehension and determination in her gaze. "Stay close to the gate, Halie," I say firmly. "I'll position myself between you and the corridor, ready for anything that might come out of those shadows."

My mind races, trying to anticipate what threats may lurk beyond this wards. The skeletons and whatever entity stalks within the tower are real dangers, but it's the magic that worries me most. Dark, hungry, alive... this is not a force to be trifled with. I take a deep breath, the scent of decay and ancient stone filling my nostrils. The fatigue from our journey weighs heavy on my limbs, but I push it aside. We've come too far to turn back now. "Merrin, keep an eye on those runes. Jeane, Seraphine - be ready with your spells, but hold until we're sure of what we face. Halie..." I meet her eyes again, seeing the courage there. "Stay safe. We need you."

My hand tightens on the mace's haft as I turn to face the yawning darkness of the corridor. Whatever lies ahead, I'll be the shield that holds back the tide. That is my oath, my duty, and my honor. I take a step forward, into the unknown, ready to meet whatever fate awaits us in the depths of this accursed tower. The pulsing of the runes seems to quicken at my approach, as if they too sense the confrontation to come. "Let's end this," I growl, more to myself than to the others. "For the Time-Splitting Sword. For the mission. And for whatever gods might be listening."

With that, I stride forward into the shadows, my companions falling in behind me. The gate looms ahead, its runes pulsing like a monstrous heartbeat. Beyond lies darkness and danger... and perhaps, if we are fortunate and skilled enough, the prize we seek. I steel myself, ready for whatever may come. In this moment, there is only the path forward, and the will to see it through. The rest... well. The rest we'll face when we reach it. One step at a time, into the unknown.

The sigils aren't just symbols—they're mouths. This entire ward is alive in some way, and it's feeding on ambient magic like we're walking through its dinner buffet. The pattern suggests a filter: it recognizes intent and source. Merrin's iron tools didn't trigger a trap—it tasted them and found the metal unsatisfying. But if she'd used a silver tool or cast a spell... I don't want to think what would've happened then. We need to decide if claiming that sword is worth playing this thing's game on its terms, because right now? It's deciding whether it likes us better than starving. And while we're standing here being appraised by sentient stone and whatever's stomping around inside... we're trapped behind a gate that slammed shut magically after opening. Clever design. The ward knows exactly what it's doing. We should either back away slowly right now, or I need to map every single rune before we commit to entering this cursed hallway. And I need Merrin to keep her iron tools holstered until I say otherwise—that last thing we need is her accidentally seasoning the wards' dinner plate with pure arcane sauce.

The pulsing runes seem to writhe under my touch, hungry for more magic. I shiver, rubbing my arms. "This whole thing feels alive. Like it's... waiting for us to make a move."

I glance back at Halie and the others, eyes wide. "Maybe we should rethink this. That sword might not be worth whatever price this tower's asking." But even as I say it, I know we've come too far to turn back now. Stepping away from the gate, I peer into the shadowy corridor beyond. "Alright, let's see what secrets you're hiding," I mutter. Drawing my lockpicks, I begin to work on the ancient wards sealing the tower entrance, half-expecting them to reach out and grab me at any moment. The air feels thick with tension, the weight of ancient magic pressing down on us. "May the gods have mercy on our souls... and our sanity," I whisper, more prayer than joke. Taking a deep breath, I commit to my task, praying my skills are enough to outsmart whatever traps this hungry ward has in store.
