The air around them seemed to thicken, the ancient magic of the ward pulsing like a living heartbeat. Varrika shifted her grip on the heavy mace, eyes scanning the shadows beyond the gate for any sign of movement. The dwarf woman's instincts screamed at her—this place was wrong, dangerous in ways she couldn't quite name. Yet here they stood, trapped between the Whispering Woods and whatever lay beyond this sealed entrance.

Merrin moved closer to Varrika, her hand drifting instinctively toward the dagger at her belt. "You hear that?" she whispered, head tilted slightly. The sound of footsteps echoed from deeper inside the tower—slow, deliberate, and growing steadily louder. The halfling scout's dark eyes narrowed as she tried to pinpoint their source. "Company's coming," she murmured.

Jeane crouched lower, her tall frame barely visible behind the cover of a crumbling stone pillar. The succubus's crimson eyes gleamed in the dim light as they studied the intricate runes covering the gate. Each symbol seemed to writhe under her gaze, hungry for more magic, more attention. She hissed softly through her teeth. "This thing is alive," she said, voice barely audible. "And it's not alone." The magical filter built into the ward wasn't designed to kill—the sigils were far more subtle than that. No, this was something worse: a trap that fed on arcane power, growing stronger with each spell cast near it.

Seraphine moved closer, her sharp elven eyes narrowed in concentration as she studied the complex patterns covering the gate. The air crackled with power, and she could feel the magic pulsing through the stone like a heartbeat. "These aren't mere wards," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "They're alive, drawing power from ambient magic. Merrin's iron tools likely triggered a sensitivity response rather than an immediate trap." Her fingers traced the air above one particularly complex rune, following its curves and angles as if reading braille.

The stones groaned again, louder this time—a sound like ancient bones shifting beneath layers of dust and decay. Varrika tensed, ready to move at the first sign of threat. Whatever waited inside that tower, it was awake now, and they were trapped between it and whatever horrors lurked in the Whispering Woods behind them.
