The stone gate loomed before them, ancient and forbidding, its surface covered in runes that seemed to writhe with dark energy. Merrin approached cautiously, her halfling fingers hovering just above the surface before she thought better of it and pulled back. "This thing's alive," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "Hungry somehow." Her hand instinctively went for her hammer, but something stayed her motion—a sense that iron might be a very bad idea here.
Jeane circled the entrance with predatory grace, her tall frame tense as she studied the patterns. The succubus's crimson eyes gleamed in the dim light, and her dark leathery wings lay flat against her back—an instinctive defensive posture. "The magic is alive," she said softly, her voice barely carrying over the wind through the trees. "Watching us." She gestured sharply for Merrin to stand back. "Put those iron tools away before you set off something we can't stop."
Merrin complied with a soft click of metal on leather, the runes seeming to pulse more hungrily as she withdrew her touch. "Alright, alright," she muttered, eyeing the stonework with suspicion. "What now?" Her fingers itched for her hammer, but something told her that bringing iron to this particular fight might be a very bad idea.
Seraphine watched the exchange with growing unease, her sharp eyes scanning the runes for any sign of weakness or pattern. The magic felt wrong—hungry in a way she'd never encountered before. "Brute force won't work here," she said finally, her voice tight with controlled apprehension. "Whatever this ward is, it's ancient and powerful. We need to find its key." She glanced at Merrin. "And keep our distance until we do."
The wind through the trees seemed to carry a low hum now, barely audible but unmistakably present. Something inside the tower was moving—footsteps approaching the gate, slow and deliberate. The runes pulsed faster in response, their hunger intensifying. They were running out of time to decide what to do next.
