The runes pulsed hungrily, each stroke of the ancient symbols seeming to writhe with dark energy as they fed on Merrin's proximity. The dwarf woman snatched her hands back as if burned, eyeing the stonework with newfound wariness. "This thing isn't just sitting here," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "It's alive somehow—hungry." Her fingers itched for her trusty hammer, but something told her that bringing iron to this particular fight might be a very bad idea.
Jeane circled the entrance carefully, her tall frame tense as she studied the patterns with intense concentration. The succubus's crimson eyes gleamed in the dim light, and her dark leathery wings lay flat against her back—a clear sign of her apprehension. "I won't let any of us get pulled into whatever this thing's hunger is made of," Halie declared firmly from a safe distance behind them. The cleric's blue-grey eyes were hard with determination, her small silver cross necklace catching what little light filtered through the trees.
Varrika moved to position herself between Halie and the tower entrance, her heavy mace ready in her hands. The dwarf woman's scarred face was set in a grim expression as she glared at the pulsating runes. "Something feels wrong about this," she growled. "That magic isn't just sitting there—it's waiting." The footsteps inside grew louder now, slow and deliberate as something approached the gate from within.
Jeane finished her detailed mapping of the outer ring of runes—each curve and stroke meticulously documented—but even from a safe distance, she could feel the ward's predatory nature. Something approaches inside, its footsteps growing louder by the second. Merrin's lockpicks have already triggered hidden pressure plates beneath the gate, activating the entire magical defense system.
The air inside the Whispering Woods felt heavy and wrong, like something ancient was watching them. The runes glowed brighter with each passing moment, their magic hungry for arcane power and life force. Varrika's instincts screamed at her to retreat, but they needed to get inside that tower. The legendary Time-Splitting Sword awaited them—if they could survive whatever lay beyond the gate.
The footsteps stopped on the other side of the barrier. A moment of heavy silence passed before a deep voice rumbled through the stone. "Who disturbs my slumber after all these years?"
Merrin's hand tightened around her lockpicks, her heart pounding in her chest. The magic wasn't passive—it was sentient and hungry. And now it knew they were here.
