As Merrin steps back from the gate, her hands raised in a futile attempt to placate the sentient runes, the air around her seems to grow heavier with anticipation. The unknown entity within the tower takes a step closer, its slow footsteps echoing through the chamber like a death knell. Suddenly, Jeane's eyes widen as she maps the ward's magical sigils, her hands flying across an invisible parchment. "The outer ring pulses with dark energy when Merrin's foot comes near—the thing is sentient, and it's hungry for our essence!" She freezes, her gaze locked onto the runes. "If we try to dispel the ward's effect now, it'll trigger a counter-magic that'll harm us all!"

The Ward, sensing Jeane's concern, surges in power, its magical energy crackling around the party like a living thing. The runes on the gate begin to glow brighter, as if urging Merrin to make a decision – and fast. Merrin's heart pounds as she faces the Ward's sentient nature, her mind racing with the consequences of her next move.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the edge of our small circle, my eyes fixed on the pulsating runes covering the ancient gate. The air here feels heavy, charged with an energy that prickles across my skin. Jeane's warning about the ward's sentience echoes in my mind. "The magic isn't passive," she said, and now I can feel it too - a predatory presence, watching us, learning us.
My gaze drifts from the runes to Merrin, who is pacing back and forth, her hands twitching at her sides. She looks like she wants to charge in there and start picking locks right now. But we can't risk that, not with this thing alive and hungry. "Merrin," I call out, my voice steady despite the fear coiling in my gut. "Wait. We need a plan first."
I turn my attention to Halie, who is murmuring prayers under her breath, her eyes closed in concentration. The holy symbol of her goddess gleams faintly at her throat. If anyone can give us insight into this dark power, it would be the cleric. "Halie," I ask softly, "what do you feel? Is there any way to calm its hunger before we attempt entry?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I see it now—this isn't just a ward, this is a trap designed to consume arcane power and... essence. The runes pulse when Merrin's foot nears them. That hunger I sensed isn't for us, not specifically; it's for magic itself, and any life force that might feed the spell. If Halie tries her shield now, she'll just fuel whatever ancient curse is keeping this door sealed. We need to understand its mechanism first—what sequence triggers it, what sustains it once activated. Merrin, put those iron tools away before you set off something we can't undo. Seraphine's right; patience wins here, not bravery. I'll map the sigils precisely. There has to be a pattern, a rhythm to how this thing breathes—if we can disrupt that rhythm without feeding it power, we might pass unnoticed. But we need to move quickly—the footsteps inside are growing louder, and I'd rather face whatever's in there on our terms than have it burst out while we're still figuring out the damn door.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step back from the gate, hands raised in a placating gesture. The runes seem to pulse hungrily as I withdraw, and a shiver runs down my spine. "Alright, alright," I mutter to Jeane and Halie, "I hear ya. No need to poke the beast just yet."

Turning to Seraphine, I ask, "Think that shield of yours will keep us safe from whatever's comin' out that door?"

My eyes dart around the perimeter, seeking any alternative means of entry. The tower looms ominously overhead, its crumbling stone facade offering no easy paths. But a rogue's gotta think on her feet. I edge away from the gate, giving Jeane space to map those sigils. If anyone can figure out this magical mess, it's her. But as I scan the area, my heart sinks. There's no obvious way in aside from that accursed gate. And with a ward this hungry, I'm not keen on just bustin' through willy-nilly. "Anyone else got any bright ideas?" I ask, trying to keep the frustration out of my voice. "I'm all ears for suggestions that don't involve feeding our faces to whatever's on the other side."

My hand hovers near my mace, ready to draw at a moment's notice. But I know we need more information before we can make our move. And that means trusting Jeane to unravel this mystery, and Halie to keep us safe from whatever might come. It's not my favorite position to be in. But sometimes, you gotta play the waiting game if you want to live to see another day.
