The tower's entrance loomed before them, a yawning maw of stone and shadow. The ancient rune-covered gate seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy, each sigil glowing with an eerie inner light. Merrin stepped back from the threshold, her hands raised in a gesture of peace that felt utterly futile against magic older than any of them.

"Alright, alright," she muttered, more for herself than anyone else. "No need to poke the beast just yet." Her dark eyes darted around the perimeter, seeking any alternative entry point or hidden seam that might offer an escape route if things went sideways.

Jeane stood nearby, her tall frame tense as she studied the runes with intense concentration. The succubus's crimson eyes narrowed as she traced the patterns, her long white hair catching the dim light like a silken curtain. "I see it now," she said softly, more to herself than the group. "This isn't just a ward—it's a trap designed to consume arcane power and... essence." Her voluptuous form shifted slightly as she continued, "The runes pulse when Merrin's foot nears them. That hunger I sensed isn't for us, not specifically; it's for magic itself, and any life force that might feed the spell."

Seraphine moved closer to Jeane, her sharp elven features etched with concern. The wizard's dark elegant hair caught the faint light from above as she shook her head. "If Halie tries her shield now," she began hesitantly, "she'll just fuel whatever ancient curse is keeping this door sealed." Her keen intelligent gaze fixed on the runes themselves. "We need to understand its mechanics before attempting entry."

The slow footsteps inside the tower grew louder, each heavy thud echoing through the stone like a countdown. Whatever approached was close now—too close for comfort. Merrin's hand drifted to her crossbow instinctively, fingers curling around the stock in a familiar grip. "Think that shield of yours will keep us safe from whatever's comin' out that door?" she asked Seraphine, her voice tight with barely contained apprehension.

The ancient gate itself seemed to shudder slightly at their words, the runes intensifying their glow until they cast grotesque shadows across the stone floor. The magic here was hungry—and it had been waiting for a long time.
