Halie studies the ward's runes intently while Jeane maps their structure with arcane symbols. Merrin shifts her weight from foot to foot, eager to act despite the obvious risks. The Whispering Woods press in around them—ancient trees seeming to lean closer, their voices a susurrus of laughter or warning.
"Ancient magic," Halie mutters. "Bound sentience—hungry, predating most modern religion." Her blue-grey eyes meet Jeane's crimson ones. "Not tied to any deity we know?"
Jeane nods slowly, her fingers still tracing symbols in the air. The runes glow faintly, responding to her presence with a palpable hunger even at this distance. "Older than our current understanding—primordial appetite." She looks up at Merrin and Halie in turn. "We must coordinate carefully. This ward is too dangerous for solo entry."
Merrin lets out a low whistle, her earlier bravado faltering slightly. "So we've got a starving ghost guarding the door?" She runs a hand through her short hair, frustration evident in every line of her body. "Any bright ideas on getting past this thing without becoming its next meal?"
Halie's expression darkens as she considers the implications. "If it predates modern religion, we're dealing with something beyond our current magic framework." She glances back at the tower looming ahead through the trees. "We need to approach this carefully—study the ward thoroughly before attempting entry."
Jeane nods in agreement. "I can map its structure, but we'll need time and distance from its direct influence." Her eyes drift between her companions. "Whatever we do, it must be coordinated. This ward is too dangerous for solo entry."
Merrin's eyes light up at the suggestion, her rogue instincts flaring back to life. "Aye, I can move quick when needed. But what if there's no other entrance? What if this is it?" She gestures toward the tower looming ahead.
Halie sighs, knowing they're circling back to the same problem. "Then we'll have to be even more careful—study the ward thoroughly before attempting entry." Her gaze drifts between her companions. "We can't afford mistakes here. The consequences are... significant."
The group falls silent for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts. The Whispering Woods seem to hold their breath around them—ancient trees creaking with voices that sound suspiciously like laughter or warnings. Somewhere deep within the stone structure, footsteps continue their slow, deliberate approach toward the entrance. Time is running out.
Merrin breaks the silence at last, her voice barely above a whisper. "Alright then. We'll find another way in—either around or through this bloody thing." Her dark eyes gleam with determination despite the obvious risks. "But first, we need to know what we're up against properly. Jeane, can you tell us more about these runes? What kind of magic is it exactly?"
