The gate's runes pulsed with a hungry light, each symbol seeming to stare at the party with malevolent intent. Merrin took a cautious step back from the threshold, her hand instinctively moving toward the dagger at her belt. The wiry halfling scout had seen her fair share of dangerous situations, but something about this ancient magic felt... wrong.
"Right," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "No magic, got it." Her eyes darted around the group, lingering on Halie as the tall succubus woman focused intently on some shield spell. A frown tugged at Merrin's lips—she knew better than to rush into situations like this, but something about standing here doing nothing felt equally dangerous.
"Halie?" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper. "You sure that divine energy of yours won't just... feed this thing?" The thought of powering up whatever ancient horror guarded this place with their own magic seemed like a terrible plan.
Varrika grunted in agreement, shifting her grip on the heavy mace resting against her shoulder. The dwarf's face was set in a grim expression, her eyes fixed on the gate as if expecting it to come alive at any moment.
Jeane stood nearby, her crimson eyes narrowed in concentration as she studied the runic patterns. The succubus woman's voluptuous form seemed almost too large for the shadowy clearing, her dark leathery wings tucked close against her back. She raised a hand, palm out toward the gate, and closed her eyes.
I can feel it watching us—the ward is sentient somehow, learning our composition like a predator sizing up prey, she thought, her mental voice barely more than a sigh. These runes aren't just symbols; they're eyes. And I swear, I can sense hunger in them—magic maybe, or blood perhaps.
The pattern was there, but it was complex, pulsing in time with... something. A heartbeat? No, slower. The rhythm felt ancient and patient.
I need more time to map the sequence fully before we try anything risky, she mused, opening her eyes slowly. Something's approaching inside the tower—slow footsteps, deliberate. We don't have much time.
Seraphine stood off to the side, her sharp elven features etched with concentration as she studied the gate. The wizard woman's dark elegant hair caught what little moonlight filtered through the canopy above, and her keen intelligent gaze never left the ancient ironwork.
I hold my hand out, palm flat toward the pulsating runes on the gate, feeling the dark energy radiate like a feverish chill against my skin, she thought, her mental voice barely more than a whisper. The magic is old, older than any of us here, and it knows we mean it harm. It's tasting the air for our intent.
My eyes narrow as I study the sequence, the way the light catches on the ancient ironwork. Merrin's right - those runes are eyes, and they're not just decorative.
