The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step closer to the ward, my eyes tracing its pulsing runes while my fingers test the air for magic currents. The energy is wrong—slick and hungry in a way arcane constructs shouldn't be. This thing is alive somehow, watching us through those symbols. Merrin, I say softly, test your iron tools with caution, but don't touch the runes yet. We need to understand what triggers its response before we provoke it further. The ward's hostility is growing more pronounced, and whatever's inside that tower now knows we're here. Whatever it is... it's not natural. Seraphine, I continue, cast a detection spell if you have one that won't disrupt the ward itself—something non-arcane, careful. We need to know what kind of entity we're dealing with before we commit to entering or retreating.

I don't like this. The magic feels wrong, and the footsteps inside are getting closer. We're trapped between a sentient ward and whatever's within that accursed tower. Time is running out for careful planning. We could try to force our way through—the sheer power of Halie's faith or Varrika's brute strength might overpower it. But that feels like rolling dice while blindfolded. Or we could attempt to negotiate with the ward—though negotiating with sentient magic that clearly wants us dead is... risky, to say the least. I'm considering a more subtle approach: using my own arcane abilities to test its boundaries, probe for weaknesses without triggering an all-out magical assault. But that requires precision I'm not certain I have while this exhausted and the ward's energy is so hostile. Whatever we choose, it needs to be soon. The footsteps inside are almost at the gate now, and I don't want us caught between two threats when whatever that is emerges.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I inch closer to the pulsing runes, tracing one with my finger, watching for any reaction from the ward. The runes are cold to the touch, yet they seem to be humming with an otherworldly energy. I step back from the gate, my eyes darting between the symbols and the others in our party. "Alright, I made contact, and no immediate reaction," I mutter under my breath. "But that doesn't mean we're in the clear. Halie, Seraphine, keep your eyes peeled for any changes in the ward's energy. Varrika, stay frosty out there—we don't know what might be lurking in the shadows."

I take a deep breath, trying to still my racing heart. The thought of whatever is inside the tower, taking another step forward, sends a chill down my spine. But we've come this far, and the Time-Splitting Sword is within our grasp. I can't let my fear hold us back now. "Jeane, what do you think? Is there any way we can test the ward's triggers without setting off alarms?" I ask, hoping her arcane knowledge might provide some insight into this ancient magic. As I wait for her response, I can feel the weight of my crossbow in my hands, a reminder of the dangers that lie ahead. But for now, all we can do is take things one step at a time and hope that our combined skills and wits will be enough to overcome whatever challenges the tower has in store for us.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The runes' dark pulse quickens, making my skin prickle with unease. That thing on the other side of the gate is getting restless. I tighten my grip on the mace, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at the first sign of trouble. "Halie, Halie!" I call out in a low, urgent tone. "Stay sharp, lass. Keep your holy symbol ready and your shield high. Whatever's in there, it doesn't like us."

I position myself between the cleric and the tower's entrance, a solid wall of dwarven granite to block any undead or foul magic that might come rushing out. My eyes dart from the pulsing runes to the shadows of the corridor beyond, searching for any hint of movement. "Merrin, Jeane, Seraphine - you lot be careful with those runes now. We don't know what they're watching for, but I've a feeling they'd love nothing more than to trap us in here with whatever hungry beastie is lurking inside."

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the fight to come. The air is thick with ancient magic and the stench of death, and my heart pounds in my ears as I wait for the inevitable confrontation. "Alright then," I mutter under my breath, "Let's see what you've got."
