The ancient ward pulsed with dark energy, its runes writhing like living things beneath the trio's watchful eyes. Jeane approached cautiously, her crimson gaze fixed on the sinister symbols as she began casting a subtle detection spell. The magic currents were wrong—slick and hungry in a way that no ordinary construct should be. This thing was alive, watching them through those oily eyes.

Merrin, ever curious despite the obvious danger, reached out to trace one of the runes with her fingertip. The metal felt cold against her skin, yet she could feel the faint hum of power coursing through it. She stepped back quickly, her dark eyes scanning the ward for any reaction to her touch.

Varrika stood ready, her powerful dwarf frame tensed and her grip tight on the heavy mace. The dark pulse from beyond the gate quickened, sending a fresh wave of unease crawling across her skin. Whatever waited inside was growing restless—she could feel it. "Halie," she called out in a low, urgent tone. "Stay sharp, lass. Keep your holy symbol ready and your shield high. Whatever's in there, it doesn't like us."

Jeane completed her spell, her fingers tracing arcane patterns in the air as she probed the ward's defenses. The magic resisted her attempts, pushing back with a malevolent force that made her teeth grind. "This is no ordinary lock," she muttered, more to herself than the others. "The entire gate is a trap—probably multiple layers of them. We can't just force it open like Halie suggested." She glanced at Merrin. "Good thinking about testing the iron. But we need to be even more careful now. Whatever this thing is, it's sentient and hostile."

Merrin nodded, her expression serious despite the mischievous spark still visible in her eyes. "I didn't trigger anything visible," she said quietly. "But that doesn't mean there aren't hidden mechanisms waiting for us to blunder into them." She pulled out her lockpicks, weighing them thoughtfully in her hand. "Maybe I can pick the magical part while you two work on the physical? Or at least identify which runes are the key components?"

Varrika shifted her stance, her eyes never leaving the ominous gate. "Careful with those iron tools," she rumbled. "We don't know what kind of counter-magic this thing might have." She glanced back down the corridor towards the distant sounds of approaching footsteps. "And we've got company coming. We need to decide fast—do we try to open this thing quietly, or brace for a fight outside?"

Jeane's crimson eyes narrowed as she considered their options. The ward's magic pulsed faster now, responding to their continued presence. "We can't stay here much longer," she said, her voice tight with concern. "But forcing the gate could trigger every trap at once—and we don't know what's waiting on the other side." She looked at Merrin and Varrika in turn. "Merrin, see if you can identify which runes are the key components. Varrika, keep watch down the hall—if those skeletons get too close, we'll have to fall back fast."

The ancient gate loomed before them, its sinister presence growing more oppressive by the second. The trio knew they had to act quickly—but the wrong move could mean death or worse. The ward's dark pulse quickened again, a hungry whisper seeming to brush against their minds. Whatever lay beyond was waiting... and it was getting impatient.
