As the unknown entity takes another slow step forward, the ward's response intensifies. The runes on the ancient gate pulse with malevolent energy, and the air around them seems to grow colder. Jeane feels a strange, tingling sensation beneath her fingertips as she touches the gate, and the ward hums in response, bathing the party in a faint, eerie glow. The ward's magic begins to crackle and arc, threatening to disrupt any arcane spells cast by the party. Merrin's iron tools, still clutched in her hand, begin to vibrate with an otherworldly energy, as if the ward is sensing their presence. The party realizes that Merrin must put down her tools immediately to avoid triggering hidden mechanisms. The unknown entity takes another step forward, its slow pace unnervingly steady. The party can feel its malevolent presence growing stronger, and they know they must make a decision quickly: proceed into the tower with caution, or turn back while they still can.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Varrika's right—this ward is alive, and whatever's inside knows we're here. We can't just rush in. (I document the runes carefully, trying to read their ancient script while keeping my distance from the gate itself.) This magic... it's old. Darker than any I've encountered before. The air feels heavy, wrong somehow—like breathing underwater. Merrin, don't even think about those iron tools yet. We need to understand what we're dealing with first.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the ancient gate, my fingers tracing the intricate patterns on its surface. The stone is cold beneath my touch, yet it thrums with an undeniable energy. The runes carved into the heavy oak pulse with a low, ominous vibration, each symbol seeming to watch me as I approach.
"The ward is no ordinary barrier," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. My eyes dart around the crumbling stone tower, taking in its dark, silent windows. "This magic... it's bound with something dark and ancient, a power older than any I've encountered before."
My gaze falls on Merrin, who is fidgeting nervously with her lockpicks. A flicker of worry crosses my face as I imagine what might happen if those iron tools came into contact with this volatile spellwork.
"Halie," I call out, my voice cutting through the air with surprising clarity. "We need to be careful. That magic... it's alive in a way I don't understand. It could react violently to anything made of metal."
I turn back to the gate, my own magic humming at the base of my skull as I try to probe its defenses. The ward pushes back against my senses, a wall of cold resistance that chills me to the bone. "Whatever is in there... it knows we’re here."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The pulsing runes on the ancient gate send shivers down my spine. This ain't no ordinary ward. Whatever's in that tower, it knows we're here now. Halie, keep your distance. Let's document those runes first, make sure Merrin knows exactly what she's dealing with before she gets her tools anywhere near that magic. Jeane, Seraphine - you two cast whatever divination spells you think might help. I'll keep watch between Halie and the corridor. If anything comes through that gate, we'll be ready for it.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step back from the gate, my hands raised in a gesture of non-aggression. The pulsing runes send a shiver down my spine, and I can't shake the feeling that whatever's in that tower, it knows we're here now.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel it—the ward's energy is alive, pulsing with dark intent. These runes aren't mere decorations; they're bound spirit, ancient and malevolent. We need to proceed carefully. Merrin, put down those iron tools. Any sudden metal on these stones could set off a cascade of defensive spells we won't survive. Seraphine, cast your detection spells—we need to map this ward's boundaries before attempting entry. Halie, document the runes but keep distance; even looking too closely might trigger something. The footsteps inside grow louder. Whatever approaches... I don't like it. Varrika, keep that mace ready but hold position until we understand what we're facing. The gate itself is a threat—it slammed shut magically after opening once already. We're trapped within its perimeter now. We need options. If this ward has weaknesses—a reset point, a pressure plate system, or simply a way to suppress its magic temporarily—I need to know it. Can't rely on brute force when dealing with sentient magic centuries older than us all. Merrin, your lockpicking skills might be legendary but they won't help if every pin turns into a conduit for arcane fire the moment you touch it. First we understand, then we proceed. The Time-Splitting Sword is our goal and I'll see us through to it or die trying—but dying stupidly because someone got impatient with ancient magic traps? That's not how my story ends. The runes pulse again, synchronizing with whatever approaches from within. Time runs out.
