The gate's runes pulsed hungrily in the fading light of day. Merrin probed the lock mechanism with practiced fingers while Halie stood beside her, hand on mace hilt and eyes fixed on the ancient symbols that writhed across the stone surface. The air grew colder as they approached the tower entrance, the humming energy within radiating a palpable hunger.

Jeane circled the barrier slowly, wings shifting restlessly behind her as she examined each rune with predatory curiosity. "I can feel it—powerful enough to cut," she whispered, barely containing her excitement. Seraphine maintained distance, sharp eyes fixed on the magical signature that pulsed beyond the ward. The power humming beyond was ancient and complex—far more than simple wards.

Varrika shifted her weight, mace ready as she watched Halie approach the gate with growing apprehension. The runes pulsed in sync with her heartbeat, each flash sending a fresh chill down her spine. She glanced around at the encroaching woods, still uneasy about the earlier sound. Merrin found no obvious triggers or weak points in the lock mechanism.

Halie's grip tightened on her holy symbol as she began a quiet prayer under her breath. The air around her shimmered faintly with divine energy, a visible barrier of faith against the encroaching darkness and malevolent magic. Seraphine maintained the protective ward, magical energy crackling around her fingers as she prepared for whatever might come.

The party tensed as a distant sound carried through the woods—a branch snapping under weight, too heavy for a deer. Everyone froze, hands moving instinctively toward weapons and spell components. The forest seemed to hold its breath around them, waiting.

After a long moment of strained silence, the sound didn't repeat. Still, the tension remained thick enough to cut with a knife.

Merrin resumed her work on the lock, more carefully now. "Anyone else hear that?" she whispered, not stopping her exploration.

Halie nodded almost imperceptibly, eyes never leaving the gate. "Stay alert," she murmured back. "Something's out there."

Jeane leaned in closer to examine the runes, her wings shifting restlessly behind her. "The magic here is... wrong," she said softly. "It's not just defensive—it's hungry. Like the tower itself wants to devour anything that comes near." She traced another symbol, brow furrowing in concentration. "These aren't simple wards. They're... something else."

Seraphine stepped forward then, her hands moving in complex patterns as she began weaving a spell. "I'm extending my senses past the barrier," she announced quietly. "If there's an ambush waiting inside, I want to know before we stumble into it." Her eyes closed, focus intense as magical energy crackled around her fingers.

The runes pulsed again, brighter this time, and a low groan echoed from deep within the stonework. The very air seemed to vibrate with anticipation—or hunger. Varrika tightened her grip on her mace, shifting closer to Halie without thinking about it. "Something's changing," she growled under her breath.

Jeane sighed dramatically. "Fine. Rain on my parade." She turned to Seraphine. "But before we do anything, can you try one more thing? See if you can sense any... gaps? Weak points in the ward that might be exploitable?"

Seraphine nodded and closed her eyes again, pressing her hands against the stone once more. The runes pulsed brighter in response, sending a fresh chill down Varrika's spine as she watched.

Varrika moved to the front of their formation without thinking, positioning herself between the opening and the rest of the party. Her scarred face was set in grim determination as she stared into the darkness beyond. The others fell into formation behind them—Jeane barely containing her excitement despite the obvious risks, Halie maintaining her divine barrier with focused intensity, and Seraphine ready to unleash offensive magic at a moment's notice.

And so, they stepped into the darkness together, leaving the fading light of the forest behind as they descended into the ancient heart of the tower. The air grew colder, the humming louder, and something old and hungry stirred in the depths below, sensing their intrusion at last.
