Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Jeane steps forward slowly, her sorcerer's robes rustling softly. Her red eyes scan the ancient rune-covered gate with predatory interest rather than fear. The tower looms above them like a sleeping beast waiting to wake, its stones groaning in the wind. I can feel it pulsing, she muses aloud, more to herself than her companions. Dark magic thick enough to cut with this mace. Her fingers trace the air around one particularly twisted rune, and a faint shimmer responds beneath her touch—a ripple of power like disturbed water. This gate is sealed by sorcery, not mere locks, she explains, though it's clear from her tone that she's as much informing herself as leading. The runes speak of binding and guardianship. Her wings shift restlessly behind her, the leathery membranes barely visible in the gloom but their presence a constant reminder of the power contained within her. We could attempt to force it—Halie might have blessings or Merrin her lockpicks—but I suspect that would trigger whatever skeletons are still active inside. She taps one clawed finger against the gate's surface, producing a dull thud. Or we could find another way in entirely.
Jeane's gaze drifts to Seraphine and Varrika, assessing their readiness without speaking. Wizard, she addresses Seraphine directly, can you sense anything beyond this barrier? Her tone is polite but carries an edge of command—she's not asking for a mere opinion. And Varrika, if we must fight our way through undead, I want you ready to hold the line. She meets each woman's eyes in turn, her expression unreadable. This tower has waited centuries—I think it can wait a few more minutes while we consider our approach.
Jeane steps back half a pace, creating space between herself and the gate as if yielding the stage for someone else to speak or act. Her hand hovers near one of the pouches on her belt—presumably where she keeps components for spells—but she doesn't reach for them yet.
I step forward carefully, my heavy mace held loosely at my side. The air here feels thick with wrongness, like standing near something that's been dead too long. Those runes—they're not just decoration. They pulse with dark magic, and I can feel it resisting the very thought of entry.
I approach the tower's entrance cautiously, my eyes darting over every inch of the ancient gate. The runes seem to shimmer with an ominous energy, and I can't shake the feeling that there's more than just a lock keeping us out. "Hold on a moment, let me take a closer look," I mutter, stepping forward to examine the mechanism more closely. As a lockbreaker, it's my job to find any hidden catches or triggers that could be lurking in the shadows. I run my fingers along the edge of the gate, feeling for any imperfections or signs of wear. The metal is cold and unyielding beneath my touch, but I refuse to let that deter me. If there's a way in, I'll find it. "Alright, everyone stand back," I call over my shoulder, a hint of nervousness creeping into my voice. "I'm going to try something."
I stand before the ancient, rune-covered gate, my heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and dread. The air here in the Whispering Woods is thick with an unnatural silence, broken only by the distant hooting of an owl.
My gaze sweeps over the intricate carvings on the stone surface, each symbol seeming to pulse with an otherworldly energy. I can feel the history of this place pressing down upon me, a heavy weight that makes my skin crawl. This is what I came for - forbidden knowledge and ancient power. But now that we are here, the reality of it is far more daunting than any of my studies had led me to believe.
"I have heard whispers of this place," I say, my voice so quiet it's almost lost in the air. The words feel inadequate, a flimsy shield against the raw power radiating from the gate. "They say the runes on this door are not just for decoration. They speak of binding and guardianship."
I take a step closer, extending a hand as if to touch one of the glowing symbols. My fingers hover inches away, trembling slightly. The magic that emanates from them is unlike anything I have ever felt before - it’s cold and ancient, yet full of a terrifying vitality.
"Jeane," I call out softly, turning my head towards her. "Can you sense anything specific beyond this barrier? There must be more to this than just a locked door."
My eyes dart around the clearing, scanning for any sign of movement in the shadows of the trees. The thought of what might lie waiting for us on the other side is both terrifying and irresistible. This is why I became a wizard - to unravel the mysteries of the world, no matter how dangerous they might be.
I heft my heavy mace, muscles aching from the trek but ready for whatever undead horrors await beyond that accursed gate. The runes pulse with dark energy, and I can practically smell the death on the other side. My eyes dart to Halie, Merrin, Jeane, and Seraphine. We've been through worse than a few skeletons, but there's something about this place... it feels different. Thicker. Like the air itself is heavy with malice. I step forward, shielding the casters. "Let the rogue work the lock. Cleric, keep that holy symbol ready. And you two..." I jerk my head at Jeane and Seraphine. "If something nasty comes through, I want your magic at my back."
