The base of the crumbling stone tower loomed before them, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate that seemed to pulse with malevolent intent. The air around it shimmered like heat haze, but this was no mere trick of the eye—it was a barrier field, alive and hostile.

Jeane crouched before the ancient runes, tracing their edges with crimson eyes but never touching the surface. The symbols pulsed like infected veins beneath her gaze—these weren't mere warnings, they were alive. Merrin's wound had become the anchor point, shadow tendrils snaking from her leg toward the ancient stonework, each pulse drawing more corruption into the rock.

She muttered syllables that scalded her tongue, drawing symbols of banishment in the air between them and the gate, but they flickered and died like snuffed candles against the field's hunger. "Elric!" Merrin snapped, rounding on the hermit despite the pain lancing through her injured leg with each movement. "You said you knew about this place. Well, now would be a good time to share what you know before that thing consumes me whole." She tried to take a step back, but the pain was excruciating—it felt like shards of glass were embedded in her thigh muscle, each movement grinding them deeper.

Seraphine approached the ancient gate, her heart pounding in her chest as she took in the intricate runes carved into its surface. The symbols pulsed like infected veins beneath her gaze—these weren't mere warnings, they were alive. She traced a delicate finger along one of the runes, feeling an immediate sting, as if the stone itself recoiled at her touch. It was a predatory energy, hungry and insatiable.

The barrier field hummed with a dark power, its edges blurring into the air around them. She could almost see it now—a living thing, feeding on the ambient magic of the woods and now reaching for Merrin's wound like a predator scenting its prey. The runes themselves seemed to shift slightly under her scrutiny, their patterns changing in subtle ways as if responding to her presence. A cold dread settled into Seraphine's bones.

She drew back instinctively, her hand moving to the hilt of her heavy mace. "This field... it's alive," she whispered, more to herself than to the others. "And it's hungry."
