Round 16 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane continues to examine the barrier field, she mutters to herself, her brow furrowed in concentration. The runes on the gate seem to be reacting to her presence, their pulsing energy growing more intense. Merrin's cries of pain grow louder, and the air is filled with an acrid scent of dark magic. Suddenly, one of the skeleton guardians stirs, its bony hand grasping for Elric. He swiftly sidesteps, avoiding the skeletal hand by mere inches. "Back! Stay back from the gate!" Jeane warns, her eyes flashing with concern. The skeleton lunges again, but this time Halie intervenes, striking it with her holy symbol to send it crashing to the ground. The distraction gives Seraphine an opportunity to examine the barrier field more closely. She notices that the runes are shifting, rearranging themselves in a pattern that seems to be a warning. The air is now charged with tension as the group realizes they must act quickly to save Merrin from being absorbed by the barrier field. Elric's warning echoes in their minds: "We can't let her go too close...the field will consume her!"
The runes on the gate pulse with dark energy, and Merrin's leg is clearly infected—this isn't just a barrier; it's alive in some way. Whatever this tower once was, it's certainly not holy ground now. I gesture sharply at Elric and Seraphine. Stay back! Don't come closer to the gate while we assess this. I turn my attention to Merrin, her leg wound oozing dark energy that seems to be drawn towards the barrier field. Tell me what you know about this place, now! The air is thick with ancient magic, and Merrin's cries of pain echo in the silence as more darkness seeps from her wound. I consult my spellbook quickly, fingers tracing arcane diagrams, seeking a counter-spell or ward that might protect us—or at least buy time to understand what we're dealing with. Whatever this is, it responds rather than initiates contact; that suggests Merrin's corruption is the catalyst, not the cause. I need to know how this field works and why it's targeting her specifically before we try anything heroic—and potentially disastrous. The runes on the gate seem to be reacting to my presence, their pulsing energy growing more intense as I approach cautiously with a ward in mind, ready to cast at the slightest sign of aggression from the barrier.
I grab Merrin by her shoulders, yanking her back from the gate. The runes pulse with malevolence, and I can feel the dark energy radiating from her wound like a second heartbeat. "Elric!" I snap, my voice sharp with anger and concern. "Explain this field NOW! And you—" I turn to Seraphine, who's standing uselessly by, "—what did you mean about a barrier mechanism? Is this thing meant to keep us out or...eat us?"
I step between Merrin and the gate, raising my silver holy symbol—a token of the Goddess of Light, our only protection against such profane energies. The air crackles with wrongness here, and I can see the magic Jeane mentioned, swirling like dark smoke around the ancient stones. "What's happening to her?" I demand, keeping Merrin steady. "And why did you wait until she was half-drowned in corruption to mention this place was...infested?"
I grit my teeth against the searing pain radiating from my leg. The dark energy pulses, drawing me towards the gate. I can feel it pulling at my very essence, threatening to consume me whole.
"Elric, you old goat, start talking! What is this place? How do we stop this thing before it's too late?" I demand, my voice strained with agony and desperation.
I study the barrier field intently, my eyes tracing the intricate patterns of the runes etched into the ancient stone. The air crackles with an unsettling energy, a palpable sense of wrongness that makes my skin prickle.
"The runes... they're reacting to Merrin's presence. To her wound." I murmur, more to myself than anyone else, my voice tight with worry. "This isn't just a physical barrier. It's alive somehow."
My gaze darts to the struggling halfling, then back to the seething gate. A cold dread washes through me as I realize the true nature of this place.
"Elric," I call out, my tone urgent. "What did you know about this tower? About this... this thing?"
