The ground trembles once more as dark energy crackles through the air, causing the ancient runes to glow with an eerie blue light. Jeane Cromwell's eyes narrow as she grasps the true nature of the barrier: it's not just magical energy, but a living, breathing entity that's been awakened by their presence. The runes on the gate seem to pulse with dark power, and Merrin's crossbow trembles in her hand. Seraphine gasps, her eyes wide with alarm, as she takes a step back from the gate. "We can't let it get out," she warns, her voice barely above a whisper. The air seems to vibrate with malevolent energy, making it difficult for anyone to think clearly. A dark tendril of energy snakes from the runes, writhing like a living thing, and latches onto Merrin's leg. It digs into her skin, causing her to cry out in pain as the energy begins to seep into her. The barrier field around the gate shimmers and intensifies, making it clear that whatever is inside is now very much aware of their presence. The party must decide how to proceed: try to fight off the dark energy, attempt to reason with it, or retreat and regroup before facing whatever horrors lie within.

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step closer to the gate, my wings rustling softly behind me as I examine the ancient runes more carefully. The air crackles with residual magic—no mere decay here—and the ground trembles again underfoot. I turn to Elric, who still stands there looking terrified. "What did you mean by 'barrier'? Why didn't you warn us about it sooner?" My voice is sharp, barely containing my frustration. Before he can answer—if he even will—the ground bucks harder this time. The runes on the gate flare with an ominous red light, and something... emerges from between them. A dark tendril of energy snakes out like a living thing, writhing through the air before latching onto Merrin's leg. "Everyone back!" I snap, already raising my hands as I gather dark energy around me in preparation for battle. "Merrin! Hold still—whatever it is seems to be targeting you specifically." The tendril pulses with malevolent power, and I can feel the wrongness of it even from here. This isn't simple magic—this is something else entirely. I turn my gaze back to Elric, my voice dripping with barely contained threat: "You have until the count of three to explain what you know about this thing before I decide you're more trouble than you're worth." My fingers crackle with dark energy as I speak, a clear warning. The hermit swallows visibly, his earlier bravado gone. The barrier field around the gate shimmers and intensifies, pulsing with an eerie light that makes my skin crawl. Whatever this is, it's alive—or at least sentient—and clearly doesn't want us here. I glance at Seraphine and Halie, then back to Merrin. "Stay calm," I say more softly, though my own apprehension grows by the moment. "We'll figure this out."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I stare at the gate in growing trepidation as I trace the runes with my fingers. The air feels thick and heavy, charged with an ancient magic that prickles against my skin. I can see now that these marks are no mere decorations - there's a pattern here, a purpose. But what is it? And why does it feel so... alive? I glance over at Elric, the hermit who led us to this accursed place. He stands silently, his eyes fixed on the gate with a mixture of fear and anticipation. What does he know that he's not telling us? I unsling my crossbow, keeping it ready as I move closer to examine the runes more closely. If there's a lock on this gate, there's bound to be traps too. We need to be careful. "Seraphine," I call out to the elf wizard. "Any idea how this thing works?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I approach the tower gate, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs as I take in the intricate web of runes etched into its surface. The air here feels thick, charged with an ancient magic that raises the fine hairs on my arms. These are no mere decorations, I think to myself, my mind already racing through theories on how they function.
My gaze sweeps over the shimmering barrier field surrounding the gate, noting how it pulses with an eerie light that seems to respond to our proximity. It’s not a natural decay, but active magic—a living entity awakened by our presence. My fingers trace the cool stone of the gate, feeling for any subtle vibrations or residual energy.
The runes here are unlike anything I’ve encountered before, their purpose seemingly more complex than a simple locking mechanism. They appear to be part of a larger spellwork, a ward designed to keep something out—or perhaps to keep something in. The thought sends a chill down my spine.
I turn to Elric, who still stands silently at the edge of our group, his eyes wide with fear and anticipation. “Elric,” I call out, my voice steady despite the knot forming in my stomach. “What do you know about this barrier? Why wasn’t it mentioned in your warning?”
The question hangs heavy in the air, a challenge and a plea all at once. We need information, and right now, Elric is our only source. As I wait for his answer, I can feel the eyes of my companions on me, their own apprehension mirroring my own.*
