The runes etched into the ancient stone suddenly flare to life, pulsing with a malevolent blue glow. The ground beneath their feet trembles ominously as dark energy crackles through the air in visible waves. Jeane Cromwell steps back instinctively, her wings rustling in alarm. "What is this?" she hisses, eyes narrowing as she studies the glowing symbols. Merrin's crossbow trembles in her grip, the halfling rogue's knuckles whitening around the stock. Seraphine gasps, taking a swift step back from the gate's surface. "We cannot simply force our way through this," she warns, her sharp gaze fixed on the pulsing barrier field. "This magic... it resists my probing." The tower's entrance has awakened, and it does not welcome them.

Jeane Cromwell approaches Elric, her voice sharp with barely contained anger. "You said there was a barrier. You didn't mention it was alive and actively hostile!" The ground bucks again, harder this time, causing Merrin to stumble slightly. She glares at the hermit, crossbow still raised halfway. "Talk fast, old man. What do we need to do to get past this thing?" Seraphine moves closer to the gate now, though warily, her fingers hovering just above one of the glowing runes without quite touching. "The sequence is here," she murmurs, more to herself than anyone else. "But the pattern... it's not meant to be opened by force." The runes seem to pulse in response to her words, their light intensifying.

Elric shrinks back under Jeane's glare, his face pale. "I... I didn't know! The barrier wasn't like this before!" he stammers. "The sorcerers must have strengthened it somehow. There's a sequence, yes, but I don't know what it is!" Merrin snorts in disbelief. "Convenient." She lowers her crossbow slightly but keeps it ready. "So we're supposed to just... figure out the right order while this thing tries to shake us apart?" Seraphine ignores their exchange, focusing intently on the rune pattern. After a long moment, she speaks again, her voice tight with concentration. "I think I see it. But activating the wrong sequence could make things... significantly worse." The ground trembles once more, and one of the runes flares brighter for an instant before subsiding.

Jeane curses under her breath. "We need to decide quickly. If this thing gets stronger, we might not have a choice left." She glances around, noting the encroaching forest shadows and the growing darkness of twilight. "And night is coming." Merrin nods grimly. "Great. More things that go bump in the dark." She moves closer to the gate, studying the runes alongside Seraphine. "Talk me through what you're seeing. Maybe I can spot something from a different angle." The ground rumbles again, more insistently this time.

Seraphine points to a series of interconnected symbols. "See here? And here? They form a loop that activates the central mechanism." She traces the pattern with her gaze, brow furrowed in concentration. "But there are multiple valid sequences. We need to determine which one is correct." Merrin leans in, squinting at the runes. "Hmm. The outer ring seems to control the flow of energy through the inner circuit?" He nods slowly. "That makes sense. But which path do we choose? Left or right for each junction?" Jeane circles around to examine the opposite side of the gate, her wings half-spread for balance as the ground shakes again. "We need more information," she mutters. "There has to be some clue..." Her eyes narrow as she spots something near the base—a small, almost imperceptible symbol that seems out of place among the others.

She crouches down, examining the tiny rune closely. "Here! Look at this." The others crowd around, and Seraphine gasps softly. "By the Goddess... it's a key symbol. But for what?" Merrin snorts. "Probably not a literal keyhole in this stone, given how old everything is." He straightens up, scanning their surroundings. "But maybe there's something nearby that matches? A hidden mechanism or..." His words trail off as his gaze fixes on the crumbling tower wall just to their right. A section of stonework looks subtly different from the rest—smooth where the surrounding surface is rough and weathered.

Merrin moves closer, running his hand over the smooth stone. "Found it," he says grimly. The others gather around as he presses the hidden rune on the wall. With a grinding sound, a small compartment opens, revealing...

The compartment contains a plain metal disk about the size of Merrin's palm, its surface covered in smaller symbols that match those on the gate. Seraphine takes it carefully, turning it over in her hands. "This... this is the key. The true pattern is here." She traces the symbols with a fingertip, her eyes widening as she deciphers the sequence. "I know how to open it. But we must be precise—one wrong activation could trigger the entire barrier field against us."

The runes on the gate flare brighter, pulsing in an ominous rhythm. Jeane steps back, wings half-spread defensively. "We're running out of time. Tell us the sequence, quickly." Seraphine nods, her expression grave but determined. She moves to stand before the gate, disk held ready in one hand. "Watch closely," she warns. "The pattern is clockwise: start at the top center rune—" She presses the first symbol with her free hand, and it glows briefly—"then move counterclockwise for three symbols—" Each press activates the corresponding gate rune in a spreading wave—"then back clockwise for two—" The pattern forms a complex spiral of light across the stone surface*—"then counter again for four..." The ground shakes violently, and one of the runes flares dangerously bright as she presses it.

Seraphine's voice rises over the rumbling. "...and finish by returning clockwise to the starting point!" She slams her hand down on the final rune just as the entire gate surface blazes with blinding blue light. The barrier field shudders, wavers... and suddenly collapses inwards with a sound like a thousand shattering crystals. A wave of cold, ancient air washes over them as the gateway to the tower opens wide.*
