Round 70 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin steps forward into the darkness, the ground beneath her feet creaks ominously, and the air vibrates with malevolent energy. The faint chanting echoes off the walls, sending shivers down her spine. The stairs seem to be shifting beneath her weight, and a section of the staircase gives way, forcing Merrin to leap back just in time. She lands awkwardly on one knee, her foot scraping against the stone floor. As she regains her balance, the stairs creak again, this time more loudly, as if protesting her presence. The air grows colder, and the shadows seem to deepen, as if something is watching her from the darkness above. A section of the wall, partially hidden by cobwebs, slides open, revealing a narrow corridor beyond.
I peer into the gloom at the bottom of the crumbling staircase, my sharp elven eyes straining to make out the faint outlines of runes etched into the stone. The air grows colder with each step deeper into this accursed place, and an unnatural heaviness presses against my skin, making the fine hairs on my arms stand on end. It feels like a physical presence is watching us, judging our every move.
"I can sense the residue of binding magic all around us," I murmur, my voice a low, urgent whisper that cuts through the oppressive silence. "These runes... they're old, older than anything I've ever studied. And the power that flows through them... it's wrong."
I trace a finger along one of the intricate patterns, my heart hammering in my chest. The magic here is different from anything I've encountered before, twisted and corrupted by some malevolent force. It pulses with an ancient, malicious intent, and I can feel it sinking its claws into my very soul.
My gaze flickers back to the party, seeing the tension in their faces even in the dim light. Merrin's injury is a stark reminder of just how dangerous this place truly is. We need to proceed with extreme caution, but we also cannot afford to dawdle. The Time-Splitting Sword awaits us at the top of this tower, and its power may be our only hope against whatever foul sorcerers and undead horrors stand in our way.
"We must map this place with absolute precision," I say, my voice firm despite the tremor that runs through me. "The slightest misstep could bring the whole structure down upon us. And these runes... we cannot simply ignore them. They are a key to understanding what we face here."
I reach for my satchel, pulling out a thick, leather-bound journal and a fine quill pen. My hands shake slightly as I begin to sketch the layout of the corridor, my mind racing to decipher the complex patterns of the binding runes. This is dangerous work, but it is necessary. Knowledge is our only weapon against the unknown, and I will not falter now, no matter how much my instincts scream at me to turn back.
I feel the ancient binding magic pulsing from those sigils on the wall—demonic in nature, unmistakable taint. We cannot proceed down this corridor without protection against whatever entity bound itself here. The chanting grows louder; they're preparing something. This tower reeks of dark sorcery and death. I've never encountered binding circles of such raw power before—not even in the deepest hells did I see runes carved with such malevolent intent. We need to find an alternative route up—there must be hidden stairs or passageways around this place if we look carefully. Halie, your spiritual sense is keener than mine. Can you tell what kind of entity bound itself down there? Is it bound to the sword somehow—or something else entirely? We need to know what we're dealing with before blundering into whatever ritual they're performing.
I step back from the crumbling stairs, heart pounding. That was too close. I scan the shadows for any sign of movement, ears straining for the slightest sound. Nothing stirs. "Everyone okay?" I whisper. "No one fall for that trick again."
I crouch down, examining the stonework where the steps gave way. Definitely a trap. The design is clever - it's hard to spot until you're right on top of it. I run my fingers along the edge, feeling for tripwires or pressure plates. "Alright, here's what we've got," I mutter. "The stairs are unstable as hell. We need to find another way up."
I straighten up and take a few steps back, looking at the tower wall with a critical eye. There has to be another entrance somewhere. In my experience, places like this always have a back door. "Seraphine, can you do that magic trick again? You know, with the glowing symbols? Might help us spot hidden passages or secret doors."
I keep my eyes moving, alert for any sign of danger while I wait for her answer. The chanting from inside the tower seems to be getting louder. Whatever's in there, it knows we're here now. "Oh, and Halie? Keep an eye on that scraped knee, yeah? We may need to run soon, and I'd rather not have you hobbling."
