The air grew thick and heavy as Merrin approached the crumbling stone tower, his keen eyes scanning every crack and crevice for hidden dangers. The stones themselves seemed to pulse with malevolent intent, their energy making his skin crawl and his breath catch in his throat. Each step forward felt like wading through treacle, the ground beneath his feet shifting ominously with every movement. Halie's warning rang in his ears, the cleric's spiritual senses clearly screaming alarm at whatever unholy energies resided within these ancient walls. The human woman stood with her hand resting on the hilt of her heavy mace, ready to defend herself and her companions against whatever horrors might emerge from the shadows. Her blue-grey eyes scanned the darkness, searching for any sign of movement or threat.

Jeane moved forward with predatory grace, her dark wings half-spread for balance as she approached the shifting runes that covered one section of the wall. The succubus sorcerer's crimson eyes glowed faintly in the dim torchlight as she assessed the magical signatures etched into the stone. "I feel it too," she murmured to Merrin, her voice a low purr. "This place is saturated with dark magic—demonic binding circles, ancient and powerful." She traced one of the symbols with a delicate finger, her expression grim. "We cannot proceed down this corridor without protection against whatever entity bound itself here."

Seraphine descended the crumbling stairs behind them, her sharp elven eyes narrowed in concentration as she studied the oppressive atmosphere. The air grew colder with each step deeper into this accursed place, and an unnatural heaviness pressed against her skin, making the fine hairs on her arms stand on end. It felt like a physical presence was watching them, judging their every move. "I can sense the residue of binding magic all around us," she murmured, her voice a low, urgent whisper. "Powerful wards and seals designed to contain something... terrible."

Merrin crouched down, examining the stonework where the steps had given way moments earlier. The design was clever—it's hard to spot until you're right on top of it. He ran his fingers along the edge, feeling for tripwires or pressure plates. The ground here is unstable, and I'd bet there are more like this further down." He glanced back at Jeane and Seraphine. "We need to find an alternative route—either intentional or unintentional."

Jeane's wings shifted restlessly behind her as she studied the corridor ahead with crimson eyes narrowed in concentration. The oppressive presence seemed to pulse with anticipation, as if whatever lay ahead was savoring their fear. She began casting a protective spell over herself and her companions, arcane energy shimmering around them. "This tower reeks of dark sorcery and death—I've never encountered binding circles of such raw power before—not even in the deepest hells did I see runes carved with such malevolent intent. We cannot proceed down this corridor without protection against whatever entity bound itself here."

Seraphine moved closer to Merrin, her expression concerned as she examined his work on the damaged section of stairs. "Definitely a trap," she said softly, her sharp elven eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. "The design is clever - it's hard to spot until you're right on top of it." She began pulling scrolls and components from her pack, laying them out on a clear section of floor. "I'll need to prepare a focusing array—it won't be perfect, but if we can create even a small opening..."

Merrin stood up slowly, his hand still resting on the damaged section of stairs. The ground here is unstable, and I'd bet there are more like this further down." He glanced back at Jeane and Seraphine.* "We need to find an alternative route—either intentional or unintentional."

Jeane began explaining, her voice soft and measured as she tried to convey the complexity of what she was sensing. "I don't think it's that random," she said slowly, her crimson eyes gleaming with concern. "The magic is... focused. Not on time, but on location." She closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating her senses even more deeply. When she opened them again, there was a flicker of something—fear?—in her gaze.

Merrin felt his heart skip a beat at the expression on Jeane's face. Whatever she'd just sensed through that portal... it wasn't good. He spoke softly, trying to keep his voice steady despite the rising dread in his chest. "Jeane?"
