As Jeane backs up to find an alternative route, Halie's silver cross casts flickering light on the crumbling stone wall, illuminating a section where the runes seem to be shifting, as if trying to convey a hidden message. The air thickens with the stench of decay and something else – a metallic tang that makes Seraphine's eyes narrow in distaste. The ground beneath Merrin's feet gives a faint creak, as if the very foundations of the tower are protesting the group's presence. The sound is almost imperceptible, but it sends a shiver down Halie's spine. The cleric's eyes dart to Jeane, seeking reassurance before turning back to the wall carving, now pulsating with an erratic energy that seems to be drawing closer.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I shiver as Halie's words echo through the musty air. A rotting tooth indeed. I take a step back from the wall, my boots scuffing against the stone floor. The runes seem to pulse more urgently at the movement, and I feel an unnatural heat emanating from them. "Right then," I mutter, trying to keep the tremor out of my voice. "If we can't go forward and we can't go back, what's left? Up, I suppose." I tilt my head back, scanning the towering walls that rise into darkness above us. "There's got to be a way up. A hidden door, a ladder, something."

I step away from the wall, moving to the center of the room. My eyes dart from corner to corner, searching for any sign of a secret passage or trapdoor. "Keep your eyes peeled, lothe. If there's a path out of here, I'll find it. And if there's a path in..." I let the sentence trail off, not wanting to jinx our chances. But as I move, the floor beneath my feet creaks ominously. I freeze, holding my breath. The sound seems to echo through the chamber, and for a moment, I swear I can hear something else - a skittering, a whispering, a malevolent presence lurking just out of sight. I swallow hard, my mouth suddenly dry. "Just the old stones settling," I mutter, but even I don't believe it. No, there's something else here. Something ancient and hungry and waiting. I take another step, my hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of my dagger. The metal is cool against my palm, a reassuring weight. But as I move deeper into the room, I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched. That whatever dwells in this tower knows we're here, and it's just waiting for us to make a mistake. "Alright, lothe," I say quietly, more to myself than to the others. "Let's see what secrets this place is hiding." And with that, I begin to move forward, my eyes scanning every shadow, my senses on high alert. Because in a place like this, one wrong step could mean the difference between life and death.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step back from the pulsing wall, eyes narrowing as I study the shifting runes. "Halie's right—the energy here is wrong on a fundamental level. This isn't just corruption; this is something ancient and deliberate." My wings twitch with barely contained impatience. "We can't afford to rush blindly into that corridor. Whatever's in there... it knows we're here, and I doubt it's welcoming visitors."

I turn to Merrin, who's moving across the room with practiced efficiency. "Careful, love—if the floor gives way under you, I won't be fast enough to catch you." My voice carries a rare edge of genuine concern beneath its usual sly tone. "And Varrika, whatever you're doing back there, make it quick."

To Seraphine, who's still staring at the runes: "Can you identify what type of binding magic those are? Specifically—are they designed to contain or to control?" My hand moves almost unconsciously toward my spellbook. "Because if they're meant to hold something back, we might be able to reinforce them temporarily with our own power. But if they're actively sustaining whatever's inside... then breaking them could release whatever's lurking in this tower."

I glance around the room, cataloging every detail. "We need options. If that corridor is a death trap, let's find another way up before we commit ourselves." My mind races through possibilities—secret passages, alternative routes, or even a ritual to temporarily strengthen our defenses. The air tastes of decay and something else... something oily and wrong. "We're not leaving yet," I say firmly, meeting each party member's eyes in turn. "But we're not walking into that obvious trap either. Let's think this through—our lives might depend on it."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step forward, holding up my silver cross, letting its light pool on the shifting runes. "Merrin," I say softly but firmly, "step back from that carving." The wrongness here presses against my skin like physical weight—this isn't just unnatural energy, it's reality bleeding through something that should never have been opened. Whatever this is, it feels like a rotting tooth—if you prod it too hard, it's going to poison us all.
