The stone beneath their feet trembled with a low groan as the tower seemed to settle around them, ancient timbers creaking in protest at their intrusion. Seraphine stood at the base of the crumbling structure, her sharp elven eyes scanning the eerie green glow now pulsing in the air where Halie's purification should have banished the malevolent energy. The air seemed to thicken with each heartbeat, growing heavy and oppressive as a low, guttural whispering seemed to emanate from deep within the stone itself—a sound that chilled her to the bone.
This was no mere haunted place; the dark sorcery here was thick and cloying, pressing down on them all like a suffocating blanket. She could feel it crawling across her skin, leaving a trail of icy dread in its wake. The whispers grew louder, more insistent, as if something ancient and malevolent had sensed their presence and was reaching out with tendrils of corruption to ensnare them.
Jeane stood nearby, her crimson eyes closed as she focused on the flow of magic around them. The succubus's wings twitched restlessly, a clear sign of her discomfort even through her usual calm demeanor. "I fear this ritual was... insufficient," Jeane said finally, her voice tight with barely contained apprehension. "The sigils aren't mere decorations—they're feeding something far uglier. This entire structure feels... wrong." She opened her eyes, fixing Halie with a serious gaze. "Halie, I need you to purify this space immediately. We can't proceed otherwise. Find every inch of those symbols and cleanse them completely."
Merrin moved closer to the wall, her halfling's keen eyes scanning for any sign of further traps or weaknesses. She drew a small dagger from her belt, testing the edge with her thumb before speaking in a low voice. "I see the faint green glow pulsing from the sigils, hear the whispers grow louder in my mind. This tower's magic is no mere trinket." Her dark eyes met Halie's, a silent plea for reassurance. "Halie, your faith may be our shield against this darkness. Purify the space as best you can."
Jeane nodded approvingly at Merrin's words, then turned her attention back to Seraphine. "And Varrika—I don't care how many extra torches we burn," she said, her voice carrying a rare edge of urgency, "but find us another way up the tower before I change my mind and decide we torch everything below ground level." The succubus's wings spread slightly, as if preparing to take flight despite the cramped confines. "Because if whatever is feeding these sigils decides to make its presence known, I'd rather not be trapped in a death-trap stairwell with no escape route."
The air grew colder still as the whispers intensified, seeming to swirl around them like a malevolent wind. Seraphine felt a shiver run down her spine, her fingers tightening around her staff. The ancient stone beneath their feet seemed to pulse with dark energy, each beat of the tower's corrupted heart sending fresh waves of dread washing over the group.
She knew they needed to act quickly—either find a way to break through the magical defenses or risk becoming trapped in this hellish place forever. But which path to choose? The unknown dangers above or the growing malevolence below?
