Phase: converging

The air grew thick and heavy as they descended the narrow staircase, each stone step groaning under their weight as if protesting their intrusion. The walls themselves seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy that made Seraphine's skin crawl, the ancient runes carved into the stone reaching out like grasping fingers in her mind's eye. She drew in a sharp breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone.
"These aren't just carvings," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper that seemed to vanish into the oppressive silence of the corridor. "They're breathing." The magic here felt wrong—an ancient power that pulsed with a hunger that had nothing to do with life or death as she understood it.
Jeane moved forward, her wings tucked close against her back in a posture that spoke of unease. "I can feel it too," she said, her crimson eyes scanning the shadows ahead. "This corridor... it's not meant for us." She glanced back at Halie, her gaze steady despite the apprehension evident in every line of her body. "Let Halie walk point—I trust her judgment when it comes to spiritual dangers."
Halie nodded, her blue-grey eyes shadowed with concern as she moved forward cautiously, one hand hovering near the hilt of her mace. The air grew colder still as they descended, each breath visible in the frigid gloom. Something ancient and hungry waited for them at the bottom of those stairs—she could feel it like a cold weight on her soul.
The stones themselves seemed to groan with each step, the very structure of the tower alive with malice. Seraphine felt her stomach twist with apprehension as they continued downward, the walls seeming to close in around them despite the corridor's width remaining unchanged. This place was wrong—fundamentally wrong—and every instinct screamed at her to turn back.
But turning back meant abandoning their quest, abandoning the people who depended on them. So she pressed on, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs as the darkness below beckoned with a hunger that had waited centuries for its next meal.
