The tower's corridors twist and turn, each step echoing in the oppressive silence. The air grows thicker, heavy with decay and ancient magic. Jeane's wings flutter nervously as she senses the corruption ahead. "Something's wrong here," she hums, her staff glowing faintly. "Darkness that shouldn't exist." Merrin scans the shadows with her crossbow ready, trusting her halfling eyes to spot any movement first. I grip my mace tighter, the weight a comforting presence in my hand as we push forward.

The corridor opens into a larger chamber, the walls pulsing with sickly green light. Jeane stops abruptly, her head tilted as if listening to something beyond our hearing range. "Skeletons," she breathes. "Many of them." The scratching sound starts up—loud, close, and growing faster. Merrin fires instinctively, her bolt taking out the lead creature but not slowing its advance. More emerge from hidden alcoves, their bone fingers reaching.

Jeane raises her staff, arcane energy crackling around it as she prepares a spell. "Fall back!" she shouts over the rising cacophony of moans and scraping. I move to flank her, mace ready, while Merrin covers our retreat with precise crossbow fire. The corridor fills with bone and decay as the horde presses forward.

Jeane unleashes her spell—a wave of force that tears through the front rank, sending fragments exploding outward. But more emerge from every shadow, their hunger undiminished. I swing my mace in wide arcs, each impact shattering skulls but unable to stem the tide. Merrin's bolts find their marks with deadly accuracy, but the horde is too numerous.

"To your left!" Merrin cries out as a new threat lunges from the darkness. I barely dodge its grasp, my mace swinging wildly as I try to regain balance. Jeane fights on with fierce determination, her staff a blur of motion against the endless wave. But for every creature destroyed, two more seem to materialize from the shadows.

"Too many!" Merrin shouts, reloading her crossbow even as she fires again. "We need out—NOW!"

Inspiration strikes—Jeane's map! I shout over the chaos, and Merrin responds instantly. She produces the parchment, spreading it on the floor even as skeletons close in around us. I scan frantically for escape routes—the left corridor! "There!" I point, even as my mace crushes another skull.

Jeane nods sharply, unleashing a final blast that clears a path. "Go!" she screams, pushing us forward while she holds the line. Merrin sprints first, her halfling speed carrying her into the narrow escape corridor. I follow, my larger frame barely fitting as we plunge into darkness.

The sounds of Jeane's magic and the skeletons' moans echo behind us as we flee deeper into the tower. Our breaths come in ragged gasps as adrenaline fades to exhaustion. We stop only when Merrin's keen eyes spot a hidden alcove, pressing ourselves into the shadows to catch our breath.

Jeane slides down the wall first, her wings folding close as she catches her breath. "That was too close," she gasps, her face streaked with dust and sweat but her eyes still fierce. "We need to rest, but not for long—whatever's in this tower might follow."

Merrin holsters her crossbow and pulls out the map again, spreading it on the floor of our cramped hiding spot. "According to this," she says, her voice tight but controlled as she traces the lines, "we're close to the staircase. But there's a warded door..." She looks up at us, expression grim. "...marked here."

I lean against the wall opposite Jeane, still gripping my mace as I try to catch my breath. The adrenaline is fading, replaced by the ache of exhaustion and the cold dread of what lies ahead. "A warded door?" I mutter, running a hand through my hair. "Great. So not only do we have to find this staircase, but we have to crack magical defenses first?"

Jeane meets my gaze with her crimson eyes, concern evident despite her usual composure. "It might not be a trap," she says slowly, her fingers tracing arcane patterns as she considers the problem. "Could just be sealed magic. But either way..." She trails off, leaving the implications hanging.

Merrin rolls up the map and tucks it away, then checks her crossbow one last time before speaking. "Alright," she says, her voice tight but determined. "We rest here for a few minutes, then move out together. Jeane can handle any magical defenses on the door—she's our best hope against this kind of corruption." She looks at each of us in turn. "Stick together, stay alert, and we'll get through this."

I nod, feeling a renewed sense of purpose despite the ache in my muscles. Merrin's right—we've come too far to turn back now. And with Jeane's magical expertise and Merrin's combat skills, we have a better chance than most would against whatever dangers lie ahead. "Agreed," I say, pushing myself upright. "Let's rest, then move out. Together."

Jeane nods, her wings fluttering slightly as she stands. "Together," she echoes, her voice firm despite the lingering fear in her eyes. "We've faced worse than this before. We can do it again."
